MS and your Thyroid

Hey people!  I was a good girl and looked in the Health Pages first but couldn't find what I was looking for so I am going to ask my friends here!!

I was contacted by my gp yesterday and she said that my blood work indicated that my Thyroid level was low.   She said it's not extremely low so we will just watch it carefully for the next three months rather than starting a med right away.

I am wondering if there is any connection between MS symptoms and a Thyroid problem?  I have been dealing with a lot of TN with my eye drooping lower than it ever has before.  I have been having a lot of nerve pain in my feet.  I have been having difficulty speaking more often than not in the last few weeks.  My neuro stated that an infection in my body could cause my MS to rear it's ugly head but I don't know if this Thyroid problem would cause it to show up uninvited or not.

I have seen people talking about Hashimoto's here a lot over the years but never really absorbed what was said as my brain doesn't tend to go with the flow and absorb much at all!  hehe

Any information would be appreciated!  Thank you for your help!

Lots of Hugs,

Yes, Ms'ers are afflicted  often with thyroid disorders as noted in this 2010 article on Medscape. I have hypothyroidism myself.

"October 20, 2010 (Gothenburg, Sweden) — Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are vulnerable to a variety of other autoimmune disorders, including thyroid abnormalities, report researchers."

Here is the link to the article:

I have read several other sources stating the same thing. Antalya is also correct about those with one autoimmune disease are more prone to other autoimmune diseases.

I have read that any kind of immune disease makes you more vulnerable to thyroid disease. So therefore, it might by related!

I don't have any answers for you, but I'm going to follow this post as my TN is flaring lately (not dx'd with MS yet) and I have slightly low thyroid levels.  I do sometimes wonder how they're all connected.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hugs,
Laura
