Montel Williams interview today

FYI,  the Rachael Ray show.  I'm personally not a fan of either Williams or Ray, but always interested in  discussion of MS.

My main issue with Montell and MS is actually not with him at all.  He does what he can do to make money and stay in shape. I can't fault him for that. My biggest concern is the fact that people get confused by the fact that he looks so good physically and it causes them to wonder why everyone with MS doesn't.

Well I have MS and I have learned that the operative word to outsiders is not "sclerosis," but the word "multiple." This illness affects everyone DIFFERENTLY.  So there is no cookie cutter way to deal with it,  You must do what works for YOU!!

I try to avoid watching anything with Montell Williams in it for all the reasons DV so eloquently stated. That guy just rubs me the wrong way.

The ways that he has made money with endorsements of products that may or may not help MS is a source of concern to me.  I, too, would like to see more disclosure about how Montel has made money off the MS community by pitching expensive products to us.

Yeah, I think a lot of us would be doing well and looking good too if we had a personal chef, housekeeper, trainer, money to pay medical bills, a driver, vacation time, etc. etc.

That's the thing that bugs me about celebrities who talk about how they are coping with or overcoming a debilitating disease.

I'm happy they aren't suffering, but media tours really do the average person very few favors.

I have a son with autism too, and don't even get me started on that one, LOL!

I'm not a fan of Williams either. I would be more inclined to support him if the proceeds of all of his endorsement deals went to MS research :-)

Attributed recovery of bad relapse in 2007 to research he's involved in but didn't say what it is, said he will talk about it in a year and a half.

Talked about importance of fruit and veg, made a smoothie, plugged his juicer (surprise, surprise).  The audience oohed and ahhhed like it was one of those infomercials he's so fond of doing,  He gave each audience member a juicer, that was nice.

Demonstrated some exercises on his AB Coaster that he mentioned can be bought on QVC (again, surprise surprise).

His advice to those newly dx'ed was, be your own advocate, learn everything you can about the disease.  Good message.

Ray commented to an audience member with MS that she looked well, the woman responded that she's improved her diet and is on a medication for MS that she's doing well on.  Williams at NO time mentioned his treatment, which is Copaxone.  The uninformed majority will think that one can eliminate MS symptoms by juicing and spending two hours in the gym daily and  snowboarding, and that one can eliminate depression by sucking it up.  No mention that he copes with pain with medical MJ, perhaps as it's daytime TV in America?

Props to the guy for being so fit, he obviously works hard at it, and good for him, really.  No doubt his diet exercise are a large part of why he's doing well physically and emotionally.  But his less than full disclosure about ALL of the reasons why he is doing so well is a disservice to the dx'ed.

I know it was me who started this thread in the first place, but geez every time I watch him he irritates me a little bit more. This one felt even more like an infomercial than usual.

If only someone had told Annette Funicello to spend two hours a day at the gym instead of in that wheelchair.  Sorry, I guess news of her death today has made me extra irritated by Montel's 'pull yourself up by your own bootstraps and you'll be as amazing as me!' message.

I'm not a fan of either, either :-)  but I did see the tail end of his appearance. He was demonstrating the use of an exercise machine. Had to wonder whether he has a financial interest in it. Not a nice thought, but I couldn't help it. I think he cashes in on MS, maybe just for pity.

So what did he say about it?
