MRI Report

My MRI results read:
"No prior study is available for comparison. The ventricles, sulci, and basilar cisterns are within normal limits for size and configuration for patient's age. No abnormal extra-axial fluid collection, significant mass effect, or midline shift is identified.  No enhancing intracranial mass is identified. The basal ganglia, thalami, and posterior fossa are grossly remarkable. No definite restricted diffusion is seen to indicate acute vascular territorial infarct. The midline sagittal structures and cervical medullary junction are grossly unremarkable without evidence of Chiari malformation identified. Mild left sphenoid sinus mucosal thickening is noted. Minimal bilateral maxillary sinus mucosal thickening is seen. The visualized paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells are otherwise well aerated."

I had this done due to tingling/numbness on my left face, arm and leg.  I am concerned with the passage that reads: The basal ganglia, thalami, and posterior fossa are grossly remarkable. No definite restricted diffusion is seen to indicate acute vascular territorial infarct.

Thank you for your help.

I called the imaging center and you were correct, that was a typo. I am getting the report revised.  Thanks so much your help.

Hi Victoria - Welcome to our group :-)

I agree with ess on all counts. It is most likely a typo. Had there been anything remarkable she would have described it in detail, which she didn't do. And even if it isn't a typo, it contains nothing that points to MS. The key thing to look for regarding MS in an MRI report is demyelinaltion. There is no mention of it.

Hi. I'm betting the word 'remarkable' should read 'unremarkable,' because that's how these things are traditionally worded. See the following sentence.  If the radiologist had seen something requiring more commentary, then he or she would have added more wording to that sentence. So I think this is a sloppy mistake.

I urge you to call the center where the MRI was done and put in a forceful inquiry. Also feel free to ask the neurologist who ordered the study, or his office, for clarification.

Either way, though, this does not read like an MRI finding suggesting MS or demyelination in general. The notation about the sinus area is very often found in MRI reports, because the radiologist covers every section seen, but MRIs are notorious for making sinus issues more than they are. Just FYI.

I hope you soon learn what's causing the symptoms you report.
