Neuro visit today

Well, the visit was kind of as I expected and kind of not. He started by having me tell him what was going on with me. I really had a hard time explaining what some of the symptoms felt like and he acted like he had never heard anything like what I was explaining before. I got a little frustrated and ended up forgetting to tell him about a few things. He did a little test and said that I had increased muscle tone in my legs. He, of course, couldn't tell if I had always had that or not. He ended up scheduling an MRI of the spinal column and some other 3 set tests that are audible, visual and pathways, not sure about that last one. He said that based on my brain MRI, no history of family problems, my leg tone, and 2 spinal cord issues he is going to do the additional tests to help him see what is up with me. He said my blood tests were normal and was not concerned about them.
Did your neuros mention the word "MS" at your first visit? This guy didn't say any one possiblity for what my be wrong. I had to ask if it was really necessary for me to continue with tests to find out. He did assure me that it was a good idea to do so.
I just don't know how to feel. I'm almost thinking it's all psychological and not symptoms at all. I have so many other things going on in my life right now maybe it's all just stress related.

Take care guys,
Linda

Doubts are common and expected when you embark on the journey you have begun.  I was diagnosed with MS in October of last year and had it confirmed in February.  I still found myself doubting and asking to be tested for another disease this past June.  It just feels crazy to be so sure one moment and so unsure the next.

The tests you mention sound like ones called evoked potentials or evoked response.  They are very appropriate for suspected MS and not too invasive or unpleasant.  I'm sure there is a Health Page that would give you more information about them.

Let us know how it's all going and how you are coping.

Hi Linda,
One of the tests that neuros quietly do when they meet with you is assess your mental and emotional state.  If there is an inkling that you are suffering from psychologically induced symptoms, the neuro would be suggesting evaluations from mental experts, too.

So please for now put that doubt out of your mind.

As for the additional tests, be thankful that your neuro wants to investigate further.  you know something is wrong and it sounds like the doctor believe you and see signs that this shouldn't be ignored.

be well, Lulu

Linda,

Sounds to me like your neuro is taking this seriously and trying to get to the bottom of things. All neuro at first look at you like you are crazy but after they digest all your symptoms they get to work, well at least the good ones do.

Sounds like he is trying to get to the bottom of what is going on which is good. Go with the tests, because if he thinks it is MS he has to rule out every other mimick first in order to diagnose MS.

Good luck to you

Paula
