OT - Arctic Experience

Well we returned from Finland on Saturday and have had the most amazing trip, action packed and very memorable.
I was able to forget I had MS for a few day and think I just had an enormous smile on my face the whole time.

After a very long tiring journey travelling through the night, we finally arrived in the middle of nowhere and I have never seen so much snow in all my life. On our first day we went reindeer sleigh riding which was wonderful and then we learnt all about how they train them and generally a little local history while we sat by an open fire in a tepee cooking sausages on sticks and having a hot drink.

Then came the interesting bit..we were invited to take the reindeer individually for a ride in a sleigh and OMG I shall never forget this.  I bravely volunteered having watched a few others go slowly round the track with one of the two guys in charge nearby. Just my luck I had a clever reindeer who spotted an inexperienced driver and obviously decided it was its chance to make a break for it. I was told to pull on left to turn it left and right to turn it right..but they forgot how to tell me to stop although I worked it out that it must be like a horse whenyou pull both reins.
Within second my reindeer headed "off piste" at the rate of knots heading off into a never ending horizon with miles of deep snow ahead. it felt surreal and I relaised I was on my own and there appeared nothing I could do to stop it!!
Eventually it slowed and stopped and I saw the guy running up near to me and thought at last I will be rescued. Well Rudolph was having none of it and looked round and off he charged again, going through this process two more times before we eventually crashed into a snow bank and got stuck. Hurragh as my poor arms were aching from trying to pull it to stop. Looking back it was so funny and I think I gave everyone on the trip a few laughs.

That evening we went for a forest walk and saw the Northern Lights although it was not a brilliant viewing. The next day we went husky dog sled riding for a 10k ride which was again amazing and my hubbie was on the back doing the hard work with me in the sled and 6 huskies pulling us.  When we had finished we saw all the other dogs including some pups which we were allowed to hold and they were so cute!

In the evening we went on a snow mobile across into Sweden and this was the highlight of my hubbies's trip who relived his boy biker days. It was great fun and we had the most amazing view of the Northern Lights which were just magical,l at times there were three arcs across the skies and other times it looked like a cycone going up in a funnel to the sky and then there was like curtains right across the sky. Difficult to describe and just has to be held in memory forever.

Next day we travelled by coach to Tromso, seeing frozen Norwegian fjords and beautiful snowy mountains and breathtaking views and we flew home in the early hours of the morning.

We had one of the best holidays we have ever had and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and have come home feeling invigorated and exhilarated...just AMAZING!!!

Love and hugs to you all

Sarah :)

Oh Sarah,  thank you for posting this, you just kept me in stitches and then I felt like I was experiencing second-hand what you experienced.  What a wonderful time you had!!!  I am so happy for you!

Animals sense fear,  the problem is that they interpret fear as aggression.  So, they become afraid themselves.  How utterly funny though I'm sure it wasn't at the time.

The dog sledding sounds incredible.  I can imagine the sound of the snow and the dogs with the bells.  How divine.

Seeing the northern lights in Sweden and Norway is wonderful

I am so happy for you!

Sarah, that's soooo COOL!!  I love to travel, and I may check that out as a holiday myself for next winter.  I love winter travel - the air fares are lower, the cool temps keep my sx down, and there aren't hoardes of other tourists clogging the way!

Sounds like a wonderful trip!

Oh my - this is such a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I hope you get to do it over and over!  Thanks for sharing your adventure - I could feel the cold air rushing over me as Rudolph pranced about.

hugs, L
