Thanksgiving in the US

This week kicks off the holiday season here in the US with Thanksgiving on Thursday. Christmas and New Years aren't far behind.  Lots of expectations and demands happen for all of us and I thought it might be useful to start a discussion on how you cope with the stress.

We host Thanksgiving at our house and have about 30 people here. it is quite the day and I don't turn down any offers for help.  We cook the turkeys and provide the house and everyone else brings food to share.  Our weather forecast is calling for sunny and in the 60's, which is great because the kids can go outside and play.

What do you do to make it through the season? I would love to hear your tips.

happy holidays!
Laura

I hope everyone spends quality time with their families and can relax about all the small stuff that doesn't really matter.

Nancy decided yesterday would be a good choice for launching into the remaining parts of the kitchen remodeling.  Hosting at least 3a of her kids and their SO's, up to 7 grandcritters, etc.  First significant time we get to spend with current girlfriend of youngest stepson.

Our church is hosting the community Thanksgiving Eve service.  UMC pastor from down the block is guest preaching; I just have to do the other stuff.

Saturday we gather with my brothers & sisters & all theirs.  Have invited my daughter; we'll see.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I'll be preparing turkey and stuffing for dinner at my brother-in-laws, then it's off to Grannys.

Wishin you all a safe and peaceful thanksgiving.

This year will be different for me. Usually I spend time at my aunts with my grandma, and them go to my in laws for a bit. We are still going to the inlaws but we are gonna go out to my moms first.

The holidays aren't as stressful to me because of having to get ready. But it becomes stressful trying to figure out where we are celebrating. My aunts, my parents, my inlaws, or his aunts. It's crazy, we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. But it seems like only my aunt sets a time, and knows ahead of time. Everyone else decides at the last moment to make a dinner. Hopefully this year we can have enough time with everyone.

Either way, I always try to reflect on what this holiday should truly be about. It is more about being grateful for what God has done for you all year. Being grateful for what you have, and for the family/friends you have. It also is about being grateful for life itself, and the fact that there is always something to be hopeful for. I thank God for every new day.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. May God bless your day even if you don't expect a great one. May we all have something to be grateful for. Praying for all of you,

Kimberly

Personally this is one of the holidays I hate now. Mostly because I am reminded of all that food I love but can't eat any more. After all how long would it take for a single person to eat all of a turkey? And it just isn't a turkey unless it is a freshly roast whole turkey!

Not to mention all the other foods that you eat during this time. Fresh Cranberry relish ( Not that jellied kind),  Sweet potato casserole with marshmallows and pecans, Pumpkin Pie (the ones you can buy have too much spice), The green bean & Mushroom casserole with the French fried onion rings,. I enjoyed making the food as much as I loved eating it.

On the lighter side I watched myth-busters tonight and they proved you could cook a full thanksgiving dinner in your car even if it was not practical. They also busted the myth that you get tired after a thanksgiving dinner because of the turkey. It is really just from all of the food you eat. And don't believe it when someone says it tastes like chicken when trying you to try something new. That one was busted as well.

Over the years since I became single again I have tried many times to adjust my recipes to make smaller portions without success.  So I guess I will once again be relegated to going to one of the few open restaurants for my dinner. But I do hope you all have a great time.

I'm an only child (on my mom's side. My dad had other children). My mom lives just around the corner from me and is making a ham. There are only 4 of us. My mom and step-dad and my son and I. I think I'm going to make something with sweet potatoes because I don't think that my mom will and I love sweet potatoes.

Our DD is hosting this year!  She's 29 years old, and this will be her first attempt at the Thanksgiving turkey.  It's almost like a right of passage!  I'm doing the pies and the pan-roasted Brussels sprouts. Another friend is bringing a salad.

It's supposed to rain, here, but their house is big enough our little grandson can run around inside.  My DH is sure to wear the little guy out.

We have dinner at our house. My husband and I cook it all together. Basically he's in charge of the turkey and I do the rest. He's very good about helping to chop and peel which is great with my hands that don't work well. We always threaten to just take everyone out to eat but at the end of the day we are both tired but fulfilled.

We were not going to do anything, our son, although not at home, will be working, but we have been invited to friends home to share the festivities, which we do appreciate!

Everyone have a good one, regardless of how you plan it!

This Thanksgiving as in all other THanskgivings-  we don't talk about politics or religion ...  the Friday after Thanksgiving we would go cut down our own tree  when the kids where here.

NFL games on the TV is  must.

As far as the meal goes-  everyone has input on menu..THe goal every year is to keep it simple..(HAAA)

last few years  not to many of us have  gathered.

This Time last year my youngest BT  was in the hospital- at that time we didn't know how far his cancer had spread or it was treatable..

            Thank God-
it was treatable and he is in remission. we almost lost him his lungs we filling up,  after the Heavy rounds of Chemo,  he is now once a month Chemo..

May everyone remember the Holiday is about family and friends and good health ...
