I feel so silly asking...

I know I should know this.  I have had episodes of 'classic' (?) vertigo before, where the room really did seem to be spinning around me.  Then the contents of my stomach didn't desire to stay there.  'Spew' is the colorful word that springs to mind.

This past week, I am suddenly having the sensation that I am falling.  I used to have that sensation a couple of years ago, when all my symptoms started.  It's making me feel a little sick to my stomach.  Off.  (doesn't stop me from overeating, unfortunately!)

Any thoughts, anyone?

Hey, JazzyJazz~

Thanks for the vibes!  I got them good and strong.  Or maybe those were just my parasthesias....  I enjoyed them, regardless.  Toledo is not far at all.  Less than an hour!

My vertigo is better today.  And, I am puzzled to say I do have a headache.  I don't think it's a migraine.  I think it's from all the tension from the tight muscles I have in my neck and shoulders, jaw....I took Excedrin Migraine and it didn't help.  Neither did Tylenol Cold.

I have a new question, though.....

I wonder if the quinine in the tonic water I'm drinking may be adding to the vertigo!  I read that you're not supposed to take quinine before an ENG test.  I hope I'm not shooting myself in the foot!  Oy!

Thanks for the vibes, Jazz!

Take care!

Zilla*  P.S. -- Glad to hear you don't have MS, either!

Hi, Elaine~

My second oldest is 17.  My insurance will pay at 50%, I believe.  Whew!  We are very open about the health problems.  The kids could obviously see that I wasn't walking and I was panicked about it when it happened last May.  We had family meetings and said that whatever it was, we would deal with it.  I never try to hide the fact that I am scared, I guess.  But then we get through things.  We try to give the sense that God is in charge, then Dad and Mom.  The kids NEVER have to worry.  I'm sure they do, but we are there to talk.  Family meetings work pretty well to start conversations or questions.

The only one that gets frantic is our drama queen, the seven year old.  He is sure he needs hearing aids like me.  And glasses.  And crutches.  And anything else he's seen anyone else use!  He's so funny.  He falls on the floor with toe cramps like I have (I've never fallen on the floor), in very good form.  My oldest son calls him Oscar after the award.  We humor him lightly.  He's a good athlete, student and chess player, so try to make more of those accomplishments.....But his acting skills rock.

Quix~  Sorry you had a rough day.  I hope today is better.  Take your time with the post.  I'm not going anywhere but round and round.  You know that old chestnut very well!

T-Lynn~ Yes, I LIKE THE NEW NEURO SO FAR.  GLAD HE'LL SEE ME.  HE SPECIALIZES IN MS AND HEADACHES AND I ALMOST THINK HE'S THINKING THIS IS DUE TO MIGRAINES, BUT, SO WHAT?  MAYBE IT IS.  AT LEAST HE'S SEEING ME!  HE ASKED IF I HAD ANY HEADACHE (I DON'T) I JUST WANT IT TO STOP!

YES, THE PSYCHOLOGIST SHOULD STOP PRACTICING NEUROLOGY.  IT WAS A VERY ODD COMMENT.  BUT MY SON LIKES HIM SO FAR, AND AS LONG AS HE'S HELPING HIM, I'LL LET IT SLIDE.  THERE IS SUCH IGNORANCE EVERYWHERE ABOUT MS.  SO FRUSTRATING!  IT MUST DRIVE YOU BONKERS!

I HOPE YOU ARE HANGING IN THERE AND LETTING PEOPLE TAKE CARE OF YOU WHILE YOU NEED IT.

COME VISIT ME WHEN YOU'RE UP TO IT!  I SO LOOK FORWARD TO IT!

SIZE 3???!!!!

LOVE,

ZILLA*

Hi Zil,
I am very glad that the neuro called you, took your concerns seriously, and will see you next week.  Hopefully the test results will be in by then.  Hang in there through the weekend.  Hope you can get some rest.

I guess the Ph.D psychologist picked up some neuro training along the way!!  Boy, he makes it sound so simple!!  Actually though, he does not sound that different from some of the bozo neuros people have seen.

How old is the son that is going to Dr. C??  Does your insurance pay for the therapy?  Ours does not.  Good old primary care physicians get to play psychologist here (with meds of course).   I guess you are in a tough position because if your son catches on that you have vertigo and do not feel well, then it could make his sadness worse.  But if you try to act normal, then you feel worse.  My sixteen year old daughter has "heavy legs" today .  I am trying to ignore it for now.

Hope you can have a nice weekend.

Hi, Friends~

My doc returned my call on my way home from work this evening.  He was SO nice.  I told him what was going on with the weird sensations, and then I told him it sounded crazy (with my son sitting next to me in the car--he'd picked me up), but when I was sitting, It felt like my legs weren't there, kind of.  Kind of like when you get nitrous oxide at the dentist.

He listened (at my first visit he seemed to rush me so), and said, I really should see you.  I want to see how well your eye coordination is (something like that), and how you're walking.  Unfortunately, I'm leaving for out of town tonight. Well, fortunately for me, because I'll be visiting my daughter, whom I haven't seen in too long.  (I thought that was sweet.  Confidentially, his son was a patient of the surgeon I work for, and his son is SO delightful.  A professor.  My Dr. L. made arrangements for his son's surgery when the son was at an airport in Austria, and I answered the phone, which was how I got his name in the first place.  Dr. L. was so sweet about his son's surgery, too.  I digress -- which i hardly EVER do!)

So, I told him I'm coming in for more testing on next Tuesday, and he said to tell the office staff that they should get him when I'm done with the tests, and he'll examine me.  I'm glad he wants to see me.  I said it may be I'm agitated from the ENG test.  He tried to get the results right then, but they weren't ready yet, and said he still want s to examine me.  His demeanor was much more relaxed than the first time I saw him.  I liked it.

As an aside,  I took my second oldest son for a psychologist appointment tonight.  He's been blue for a looooong time now, and I've been begging him to go.  He does talk to me, but I really think he needs professional help, perhaps medication.  Finally, two weeks ago, my son relented, and said he's sad all the time and wanted help.

So, tonight was our second visit.  He likes the psychologist, and so do I.  Dr. C. asked me to come to his office after he had the session with my son, and talk.  He said the teen years are tough.  I agree.  He thinks my son is a good kid and psychotherapy will work for him.  We think he's a good kid, too, and want to help him by bringing him to Dr. C.  Dr. C. wanted to know the nature of my medical problems.  My son had been a little concerned about them.  (It is NOT the major problem he is having, though)  I told him I am undergoing testing right now for evoked potentials, because I had trouble with paralysis last Spring.  I said it this way, because this is how I thought my son perceived it.  My paralysis and cognitive difficulties  were a huge deal to him.  He used to call me from school at lunch to see how I was at the time.

I told Dr. C. I thought my doc was trying to rule out MS.  He asked me if I ever had vision problems.  (OMG.)  I said, No.  Just nystagmus and double vision.  He said, Well, then you don't have MS.  Vision problems are almost always the first sign of MS.  I said, Well, that's a comfort.  Thank you.

So, I just want to let all of you know that if you don't have vision problems, you do not , I repeat do NOT have MS.  So, there you go.

I'm glad my son feels comfortable with him.  I really liked him as a psychologist.  He doesn't make a good neuro.  Or maybe he does.  Maybe it's as easy as that!  Relax, everyone!

Thanks, everyone for your support, and, Thanks, Auntie, for your private message!

WHEN I HAD VERTIGO,I WAS SENT TO A NEURO-OTOLOGIST AND MY ENG/VNG CAME BACK WITH NON LOCALIZING LESIONS IN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAIN AND BRAIN STEM  WITH OCULAR MOTOR DISORDERS(INO/BINO)

WHEN DID YOU HAVE THE ENG DONE,THEY SHOULD HAVE YOUR RESULTS.

VERTIGO STINKS,AND THE MISSING PLACEMENT OF LIMBS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT,NEVER KNOW IF THAT FOOT IS ON THE GROUND.

Hi, Wanna~

Yes, I have had a little sniffle.  And I have had this sensation before, just not for a couple of years, now that I think about it.  It used to happen while I was driving, or maybe that's when I noticed it.  It felt like I "fell" in my seat.  Or if I was sitting up in my bed.

But it happened very infrequently.  Today, it's aggravating me, and making me a little queasy.

Could be my ears.  Will see.

Thanks!

Sorry you are having vertigo.  Since the sensation is different than in the past, could it possibly be from an ear infection?  Have you recently had a cold?  Just a thought.

From my own experience, vertigo seems to be a hard one to figure out.  I've had it on and off for several years and the cause is still unknown.  The only thing that has ever really helped was steroids, and it's a shame that taking steriods isn't a permanent solution!

Hope your world stops spinning!

Go, Craig!  I'm so eager to know how his test goes.  He's finally on the right track!  Don't you dare get anxious.  This is his answer.  Amen and allelujah!

I don't think it's the small cerebellum, really.  I probably make too much of that.  When I look it up online, it seems like I would be unable to even sit or walk with the atrophy I appear to have on my pictures.  Who knows?  Hopefully my new doc will!

I am considering taking a sick day, althought it would not go over too well here.  I may anyway.  Don't feel well at all.  Could picture myself lying down (on my side -- flat on my back makes me dizzy!) most of the day!

Keep us posted on Craig, and tell him not to worry!

Love,

Z*

Hi!  Thanks for responding!  Very helpful.  Yes, I don't know why everything is hitting at once.  Will be interested to see how my ENG and EEG have come out.  Although I'm sure they're NORMAL.  Everything has been, will be forever....

Thanks again.

Hmmmm.  Interesting.  I am eager to hear Quix's response to all this, if she has one.  I guess I have misunderstood about what vertigo is and is not.

Thanks for posting!

What is classic vertigo?

When I had my vertigo event, the room was not spinning, I felt as if I was instead. In my report, it says that I had "true vertigo".

Hi Zil,
Do you think the vertigo is caused by your small cerebellum??  Maybe your disease is getting very active again.  Like relapsing/remitting??  I know you are not offically diagnosed yet, just thinking.

I hope Quix can give all of us her ideas on what is happening.
Craig left for the airport.  He is having his cervical and thoracic spine MRI on Friday.

Can you take a sick day Friday?

Equilibrium, vertigo, dizziness - all these seem to go together.  When my rt. cerebellum lesion was acting up last year, I ended up with vertigo for what felt like forever.  Also, yeah, a bit of proprioperception problem, but I'm pretty sure the two aren't linked.  When you don't know where your legs are, it's because there's a nerve between the leg and the brain that's not firing correctly.  When you have equilibrium problems, it's an inner ear balance vestibular sort of thing.  I think.

Thanks, Sheila~

Actually, I did phone my doctor.  I think I was prescribed something a couple of years ago which did nothing to help, so I guess I'm hoping he'll prescribe it again....Just to feel like I'm trying to do something about it.

Yes, the aliens are surreal.  It's an odd feeling, isn't it?  Don't like it much!  Let's band together and overpower them, OK?  OK!

Hey, there! I think this is all part and parcel of the same thing. Not knowing where your body parts are in space can cause all kinds of craziness. Mostly I think it's a facet of vertigo, but then I've never let total ignorance stand in the way of my not-so-impressive opinions.

Quix, though, truly knows all about this, and whether it's likely to be a CNS problem. Why not PM her so when she gets here she'll already have the heads up.

Hang in here, sneaking behind the witch's (ample?) posterior if need be.

Thanks, bananas!

As it turns out, my son drove me this morning, as he had car trouble yesterday.  Is borrowing mine.

Things are not great at work, so I may try to wait it out.  Will keep you posted.

Thanks again.  How sweet!

Oh, and also--

I get that sensation, or rather lack thereof, that my legs aren't there, when I'm perched here at my desk.  Like I don't know where they could be....

I know we've talked about this before.  Proprioception or something....Oh, man, I'm dizzy as all get-out.

I may have to go home.  Put a call in to my doc's office.
