Thanks so much for the great infomation about vitamin D deficiency and MS development. Okay, so the farther north you live from the equator the greater the risk you have of developing MS. But, what I don't understand is this.....Caucasians are more than twice as likely as African-Americans to get the disease. You would think that if the primary factor for developing MS was vitamin D deficiency due to lack of sun exposure you would expect that the rates of blacks with MS would be much greater than whites. It is claimed that whites only need about 15 mins of sun exposure 3 times per week to get sufficient vitamin D whereas black need more like 40 minutes/3 times per week. You would think that if vitamin D deficiency was the primary risk factor for developing MS then aferican-americans should have much higher rates than caucasians? This same trend is seen with some forms of breast cancer and vitmin D deficiency and higher rates of breast cancer and blacks but not whites.
