What Now?

The symptoms of MS describe what I am going through to a T.  I had a MRI of the head and spine, with contrast and was told everything was negative.  The treatment I was sent home with was to take a multi-vitamin daily.  I was also told it was stress, even though I am not stressed out.  How does a multi-vitamin reduce stress anyways?  I am still strugling with slurred speech, blind spots, blurred vision, fatige, memory loss, pain and much more.  If my MRI is negative where do I go from here?  What else could this be? Is there another test to determine it is not MS?  I do not want to go years and find out that it is MS, and I could have been treating it all this time.  I am so frustrated please help!

Attirbuting all of what you have going on as due to stress is the product of a lazy and mediocre medical mind.  If the All-Revealing MRI is negative, then, uh....then....well, there just must be nothing wrong.

You need to run from this doctor as fast as your little legs can carry you.  Yes, doctor shop until you can find a neurologist that LISTENS to your complaints and believes you, LOOKS at you carefully to see if there is any evidence he can glean from your exam, and finally who THINKS with his BIg Boy brains to make a plan to investigate.

With your problems, you need an exam by an opthalmologist, a test called a VEP, and probably some neuro-psychological testing to pinpoint the areas of cognitive function that are not functioning.

While a vitamin deficiency can absolutely cause all the things you complain of (B12 deficiency) a multivit won't do diddly-squat to treat it.  The multivit was a condescending way of getting you out of his office by taking what would essentially be a placebo.  Did he even check those simple things that cause fatigue, vision problems, and mental dysfunction?

How about a simple CBC, thyroid tests, B12 level, ANA, ESR?  If these were not done then this neurologist did NOT do a Comprehensive Evaluation and Consult - and I bet that's what he billed for.  Did he at least do an extensive head-to-toe neuro exam?  A good one takes 30-60 minutes.

Hi MrsBarr and welcome.

Vitamin deficiencies can cause some of these symptoms, but that sounds like too easy of an answer for your doctor to give to you.

The symptoms you list could be neurological but could also come from other diseases.  There are many MS mimics - you might want to read our health page on mimics for more information.

I also like this site which give you a lengthy list of symptoms and diseases to cross-reference.  You will see how hard it might be to determine what really is MS.
