Hi Melissa, I'm so sorry you had to start those meds and have to stick yourself with needles but I am glad you did go back to the doc because now you can hopefully find some relief and get better!!!! Yay!!!! You are not pathetic and all that stuff you said, I think you are funny and sweet and your accent is truly wonderful!!!! I'm sure you were just scared like I am and many of the others here I'm sure are too!!! We all fear the unknown, but it's good you took control!!! Good gurl!!! I just had to tell you how I felt and my heart goes out to you!!! I'm sure some of the others would be better at explaining the ppms and rpms!! Take care honey!!!
Sorry I lost my smart stick, and what i've been left with is on the fritz.
As i understand it, in RRMS an attack happens, then you get better, an attack happens, then you get better etc, over time your not able to fully recover anymore and your left with a little bit more to deal with. Each attack exaserbates your old symptoms and often brings along a new one, when the attack stops you recover as much as your brain allows and then you get use to your new reality, until the next one. DMD's
PPMS is primary progressive MS, it starts and continues on its own tragectory with out any getting better, each attack exaserbates your old symptoms and often brings along a new one, when it stops your symptoms stabalise but you dont recover, you get use to your new reality, until the next one. NO DMD's
If you look at the top right, yellow icon its the health pages, lots of great pages on MS, check it out, you've got about 20 yrs of catching up to do, though i imagine what you were told 20 years ago is so old school you'll be glad if you've fogotten most of it, well worth reading.
Cheers.......JJ
Hello and welcome to this forum. In short, here is the answer to your question:
PPMS - Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
SPMS - Secondary Primary Progressive
PRMS - Progressive Relapsing
The national MS Society has a good page explaining the different types of ms:
http://www.nationalmssociety.org/about-multiple-sclerosis/progressive-ms/index.aspx
Another great resource of info is located in the "Health Pages" section on this page, yellow icon, right upper corner.
Again, welcome and come back and ask as many questions as you like.
HI,
Just to say, PPMS has no attacks. There is progression from the start. Sometimes it is slow and steady, sometimes there is a rapid decline to disability.
You may have heard of Secondary Progressive MS as this is what most people who have Relapsing Remitting MS progress to over time. It is similar to Primary Progressive MS in that things do not resolve. Some people continue to have relapses but inbetween they do not get better, others no longer have relapses and just steadily get worse.
There is also Progressive Relapsing which as the name suggests it is progressive from onset but unlike PPMS there are relapses.
There are also Borderline forms of MS such as Devics (now considered a seperate disease), Marburg MS, Balo concentris. I could go on!
Some people also believe that a small proportion of people with MS have a benign form, but this can not be diagnosed as such until many years later. MS remains very unpredictable no matter what type you have. Even if you have the same as someone else, no two people have exactly the same disease course.
( Oops sorry that was Balo Concentric! I was typing too fast)>
