body temperature

hi everyone, I was wondering if any one could tell me if they have issues with feeling cold all the time. I do have thyroid disease (low) which I do take medication for. My dose was lowered a week ago which I thought was the culprit but I still am cold most of the time. This has been a problem for me for a while now. people are walking around in shorts and I have a jacket on. I am in my 50s my latest cbc is good so I know it is not a blood thing. I am not taking any kind of blood thinners.  My husband teases me that my nose is always cold. I do have a diagnoisis of probable ms. I am just trying to find out what causes one to feel as though they are cold all the time. I have found that being cold makes my nerve pain worse so I am really trying to figure this out!! thanks for any input that you can provide...........roncart

This is a really old thread (from 2009). It would be better if you have a question to post a new question and start a seperate thread.  I am assuming your grandmother has MS since this is a MS forum?  If not, you might want to try another forum on thyroid issues or fibro. so they can address your question as it relates to her medical issues.

Good luck.

Roncart- I can't say it is due to MS as I am still undx but my temp is always out of whack. My husband says my internal thermostat is broken. Two temperature disorders I have been pointed to are Raynaud's and Erythromelalgia.

They can often co-exist especially in people with some autoimmune disorders according to Wiki.

When I get super freezing I get in the car and turn the heater on. This of course leads me to being overly hot...but whatcha gonna do?

She has fibromanalgia, only half of her thyroid left, and has been at one time anemic... but this is crazy - she is 74 and her insides are so cold that she her ones actually hurt... her temperature today is 97, and her skin feels normal... She is under 2 blankets and the heat is set on 82 degrees but it is 88 degrees outside.

Even if we can't find out what is wrong, can someone gives us some ideas on what do to stop it?: or help the symptoms to go away... and she is not feverish - this has been going on for years - but is getting worse.

I totally know where you're coming from. I, too, always seem to be way colder than everyone else and sometimes wear a midweight jacket when some people are in shorts. I do have MS, but apparently no thyroid problems (had it tested last fall and it was normal). I do seem to get increasingly cold with time, although with the recent heat wave here I am warm all the sudden.

FWIW, I do (unless it's pretty warm like now) have cold hands, feet, and calves--cold to the touch.

Anyway, I don't know what causes my coldness, but just wanted to say that you're not alone.

Hello, I ve noticed that I do feel chilled alot but finally realized I was running a low grade fever. My hubby teases me that I never seem to be at the right temp ( I'm either freezing or burning up). As crazy as this sounds I have also noticed that I can get up & move around for 15-20 min. & my temp will go from 97.5 to 100.1 so like I said I don't know why . When my Drs. appts have been in the afternoon I always seem to have a low grade fever but they never pay any attention to it even though I have mentioned it. It seems like the only time I feel half way normal is in the mornings & as the day goes on so does my energy levels. I don't know if this is helpful but I sure hope it helps. My hubby says I need a new thermostat lol. God bless you!

I have no diagnosis (though going through the motions to find out what is wrong). I wear long sleeved shirts every day (usually wear two shirts)... and I live in Florida. I have a small heater I keep in my office because I get chilled so often. My hands and toes get so cold that they hurt, and I have to use a heating pad to warm them up. My body temperature is usually below the norm. This has only been going on for the last couple of years, and I had no idea it may be related to the other things going on with me. It never occured to me to mention it to any doctors I've seen.

Well, there's a difference between *feeling* cold and actually *being* cold. Your body temp. can be quite normal, for you and for the general population, and still you feel freezing.

MS can do weird things, as we all know. One of them is to alter sensation in sensory nerves so that the cold feeling gets triggered regardless. This is just one of a great many possible paresthesias, given that we have a couple of dozen different kinds of sensory nerves. I have even had the sensation, long ago, that my legs were hot, almost like sunburned with heat radiating, but cold on top of that. Quite bizarre.

if your cold feeling is caused by MS, and that's a big if, then read up on paresthesias, especially in our Health Pages.

Hope this helps.

I too have problems with being cold.  It can be 72 degrees in my house and I am still cold.

Now that being said - if I get too hot - well then some of my symptoms get worse.  It is a catch 22 for me and I am finding it very frustrating now that summer has finally arrived here in Seattle.

I don't know if it correlates to my body temperature -  I never thought of that - something to check I guess.

Good luck,
Chrisy

It's not unusual to have a lowered body temperature.  I think we had a poll on average body temps, and they range from 96.7 to 98°...  I've heard that people going through flares can have extremely low body temperatures.

Personally, when I'm having a flare, or feeling badly, I can have quite low body temperatures - I end up wearing a long-sleeved shirt to keep warn inside the house.
