I meant to say that when I'm working in my garden, I wrap one of those around my neck.  Our garden's doing well, except for the fusarium wilt which is getting to my tomatoes... :-(

Adzuki beans!  I used to be roommates with a Japanese exchange student, and for dessert one day she made coconut beans, which are adzuki beans, boiled until soft, with coconut milk and sugar.  I know it sounds peculiar, but it was delicious.  If you've ever had red bean ice cream at a Japanese sushi place, this is where they get it from.

My big struggle this year is keeping cool.  I can really tell when I overdo it, and it ruins my day.  I stayed out too long Saturday and got too hot, and had to sleep off the fatigue - never really got my groove back until Sunday.

I recommend those Aqua-Cool neck scarves.  You can get them from the dreaded Walmart.  Soak them in water, put them in the fridge, then wrap them around your neck.  I can stay out a lot longer, as long as the neck scarf is cold.

Container gardening is the only way to go!  I actually grow my herbs at my friend's condo, where I'm living while the two of us sort out health issues; I'm driving her to a lumbar epidural on the 27th, and she's driving me to a hip cortisone injection when I get it scheduled.

She used to rent a house further out of town, and I helped her put in a raised garden.  I don't think either of us could do anything like that now; we shoveled dirt into a wheelbarrow, around to the back yard, and dumped it into the frame we built.  Ladies shouldn't cuss as much as we did, lol!

I made the mistake of planting catnip.  The cat's loved it, and Linda loved watching them come and take turns rolling on it.  The males sprayed my lemon balm, but they stayed away from the vegetables and other herbs.

I can hardly wait to plant basil, lemon thyme, and rosemary.  Last year's rosemary grew into a tree and had to be cut down.  :o).  It hasn't been hitting 60 degrees much here yet, and the sun only peeks out now and then.

Sunshine we have plenty of, along with the sizzling heat. My rosemary, thyme, chives, mint and curly parsley came back from last year. Planted new basil, sage, dill (I never do well with dill) and flat parsley this year. All are happy, but I have one very sick wave petunia. I think it's biting the dust. All this gets done in tubs on a good-size condo porch. Alas, no more garden, but maybe it's for the best.

Dang, I forgot the frozen yogurt!  Arghh, I may have to go back to the store.

My only herbs that are doing OK in this weather are last years greek oregano and pineapple sage.  I'm hoping for some sunshine soon.  I looked at the live basil plants at Trader Joe's today, but figured they would just get all pale and lack flavor without sunshine.  Oh well, everything in it's own time.  I still have pesto in the freezer from last year.  :o)

It was a pretty hungry chat yesterday wasn't it lol!.. My Basil is growing along side all the other herbs, doing very well this year. Hope everything goes well with your hip surgeon today, and frozen yogurt is yummy as well as vegie dishes.

I'ts 48 degrees here in Portland, and we're expecting a high of 54, with 100% chance of showers.  You're welcome to come visit; I don't think we're going to have much of a summer this year.  I want to plant my basil!

Having said that, we will now probably have a horribly dry summer in the 90s and 100s.  Then I'll be saying thank heavens for AC!

I hope you can stay cool and comfy!

Oh, yesterday I was very hungry after the chatting about certain delightful treats, but I managed to make a nice dish with cauliflower, onions, white wine, yams, and adzuki beans, with a dash of hot sauce.  It filled me up, was yummy, and I felt good about what I was eating, even if I filled my dish pretty full!  I wanted to have some frozen yogurt for dessert, but was too tired to go buy some.

I've got an appointment with a hip surgeon today; maybe on my way home I can pick up some groceries (including frozen yogurt).

Take care,

Kathy

Hi, and good morning to you too. Don't know where you are, but it's incredibly hot here. Will push 100F downtown, and probably 95 where I am. Thank God for AC!
