MRI RESULT ( following first Optic Neuritis)

Hi,

I'm New - hi to you all!

My scan result following first bout of Optic Neuritis ( over last two months) is below. The neuro only got the result by phone and gave me a very fast overview which was basically - its not clear but not much we can do. Just wait and see etc etc . I have no Dx for MS as yet. I'm also getting flashing Phosphenes when I put out the light at night.

Here it is

Conclusion/summary
Three small areas of T2 hyperintensity are noted on the brain study. The two supratentorial foci in isolation would be considered a non-specific finding. However, the presence of an area of abnormality in the deep right cerebellar hemisphere would indicate that inflammatory demyelination is a more likely possibility. This alone however would not be a considered diagnostic of this.

Detail

There are two tiny areas of T2 hyperintensity involving a subcortical white matter of the posterior right frontal lobe and the periventricular deep white matter adjacent to the posterior aspect of the left lateral ventricle respectively. The remainder of the cerebral hemisphere white matter appears normal. The corpus callosum is normal.

Coincidental note is made of a developmental venous anomaly ( DVA) in the left temporo-occipital region. This is a coincidental finding.

There is a tiny nodular area of T2 hyperintensity in the deep right cerebellar white matter. The remainder of the cerebellum is normal. The brain stem structures appear normal.

Intracranial vascular flow voids, both arterial and venous are normal. Cerebrospinal fluid spaces are normal. Patchy mucosal thickening is seen in the paranasal sinuses consistent with inflammatory change.

Can you help me to understand what might happen in the future? I'm pretty pragmatic.

Many thanks

Thanks Sunnyday and Essdipity! ON was my first experience ( or was it.......?) When I think back over the last number of years there could have been other things I just discounted. Like Sciatica for example which really gave me trouble about four years ago.

I had the MRI and Im....in Limbo. Not in the clear but waiting, waiting, waiting, for something to happen again!

Re other tests - none. No VEPs or anything. Neuro was fairly serious about the ON and I think if I have another bout of something I'll be DX - thats how I feel...

Nice to get your warm welcome and thouhgts - THANKS!

Hi and welcome! We don't get many from Scotland. You don't give your age, but if you are young, ANY finding of lesions is abnormal. Has optic neuritis been your only symptom thus far?  Please tell us a bit about yourself and your history of symptoms, also you history of rule-out tests. What brings you to our MS Forum?

Also please read extensively in our Health Pages by clicking above in the far right column. That will give you lots of very useful info.

If you do have MS, and that's very possible, you need a proactive doctor who will start treatment as soon as possible. If you feel he or she is hesitating or has not administered the whole battery of tests (there are loads), then start right away to find a better doctor, preferably a specialist in MS.

Best of luck,
ess

PS  Virtually everyone has sinus findings on MRI. That part's kind of meaningless.

Hi! Nice to meet you! I'm sure some of the more "wise" members will be chiming in soon to help with your MRI results, but I wanted to welcome you to the community!

You story sounds similar to mine- I was just diagnosed with O.N. a few weeks ago and I go for the results tomorrow.

Hope your neuro is helpful in the interpretaion of the MRI also! Stick around.... we say that once you join- you can never leave! :)
