negative MRI

Hi, I'm a new member.  Since spring I've had weakness (objective in my regular gym routine), loss of stamina, increased pain, awkwardness of movement (this was also noted 2-3 years ago for a month or two), sensitivity to heat, and more recently little tingly muscle cramp feelings through my legs and feet.  My spine MRI just came back without lesions, so my neurologist wants to turn me back to my physician, who has no other brilliant ideas.  Should I request brain MRI or anything?  Or just wait silently until something more specific happens?
Thanks, Mrs. Jones

Sounds like your MRI was looking for a root nerve issue if he went right to a spinal MRI.  What What parts of the spine did they image?  Arms AND legs  indicate cervical level or higher, so I would have thought he would go for Brain and C-Spine.

Anyhow, given your symptoms, I'd think they would at least want to image your brain.  Awkwardness may be related to an imbalance in muscle strength from left to right, but it can also be an issue with the brain in terms of coordinated movement.

My brain MRI came back normal, so we can forget about MS for a while and investigate other autoimmune diseases...and maybe try physical therapy so they can document  or reverse my declining strength.  One day at a time, right?  This site is a great resource, and I suspect that I may be back again in the future...  Thanks, everybody!

Yes, Lulu54, it was Sacramento Kaiser, and I confirmed that both the spine and the brain were done on 3T machines.  Cool!  I was supposed to get brain results Monday or Tuesday, but I guess today will be the day...or the doc is out of town.  ;-)

You must be fortunate to live in an area with 3T's - they aren't that readily accessible like the 1.5T machines.  Keep us posted, L

When MRI called to schedule the brain, I asked what kind of machine.  He was about to schedule me for a 1.5 but I got him to schedule me for a 3T.  Maybe the spine was on a 1.5 - I'll see when I go back on Thursday.  I'll ask for a copy, too.  Thanks for the tips, and the support!

When you have that MRI be sure to get a copy of your pics to take with you.  They should be able to give you a disc with them on it immediately.  The main reason you want these is  for your records.  You never can anticipate when you might be at a new doctor and need to produce copies of records.  Plus labs only keep files for so long and then they are destroyed- the length of that time varies.

Its great news that the doctor actually listened to you.

Neuro has agreed that it makes sense to do a brain MRI - not sure why he was ready to dismiss me so quickly - and this time I'll ask what kind of machine it is.  Thanks for the support!  I think I'll make a written list of history and symptoms to help him out, for next time.

errrr....ummmmm....Not a doctor but I would think an MRI of the cevical spine and brain is more important in finding MS than that of the l and t spine.  I would sure have a discussion with the neuro on that issue!!!!!!

Thank you Sumanadevii, COBOB and Lulu54 - I just realized that your responses were posted.  They did L- and T-spine MRI, because of the arm and leg symptoms.  It's a big Kaiser, so I presume they've got the best equipment.  I was wondering if I should push for brain MRI; all three of you concurring helps give me the nerve to demand it.  It seemed wrong that the neurologist e-mailed me that the spine MRI was normal so he's sending me back to my PCP, and he never would have a discussion with me.  I appreciate your advice!

Hi MrsJones,

If it were me, I would ask for the brain MRI to take a look for lesions and to establish a baseline.  MS is a difficult disease to diagnose - it is actually a diagnosis made by excluding all other possibilities and that can take time and lots of tests.

Talk to your neurologist about the concern that something is wrong, but you still don't have answers.

good luck and welcome to our community,
Lulu

My question is what part of the spine was the MRI done on and was it done on a 3T?  Those spinal lesions are hard to catch on a 1.5.  My next question would be why the neuro skipped doing the brain MRI altogether.  Any ideas why?
