scared

I have been experiencing strange sensory problems.  Four months ago I got a small numb patch in my upper left thigh.  It is still numb.  The neurologist said my exam (in office) was normal.  Then ten days ago my right toe went numb underneath and stayed numb for five hours.  I took a walk and got feeling back.  Then I sat down and the numbness returned off and on all night with tingling the next day.  It is now normal, but all last week I was bombarded by electricity all over, and quick jerks, esp before falling asleep.  I had no pain, no appetite, and no sleep.  Today I feel almost normal but have some tingling in hands and feet and jerks every now and then. I went to the neurologist two days ago and he ordered no tests and said it is stress.  I take no meds and have no history of MS in family.  What do I believe?  Do I demand an MRI?

Hi and thank you both for your comments.  Candy maybe you could ask your neuro if stress can bring on a week of these symptoms?  I was told it is psychosomatic but it seems very strange that you could experience such physical symptoms for a week.  I am sceptical and it is making me even more nervous and scared and probably aggrivating all the symptoms.  I also wasn't stressed when my toe went numb for 8 hours and I find it hard to believe your toe can go numb from stress when you aren't stressed, and certainly not for that long....

I'm not sure that my symptoms get worse when I try to relax, but I notice them more.  There is still that background "buzz" in my forearms, hand and feet, but I really only notice it when I;m not doing something:  Going to bed at night, relaxing on the couch, or trying to catch a cat-nap during the day.   I guess when I close my eyes and relax, it is still there, but most of the work day, I have enough going on that it just disappears into the background.  Same thing for muscle spasms.  as long as I;m doing stuff, they really don't surface as an issue, but they can sure make for some interesting problems in the bedroom.  Balance issues always seem to be there.  My partner had to grab me last night to keep me from doing a head first of the first step yesterday afternoon.  I usually have problems in the dark (proprioception) and seem to do OK when I can see my big feet.  I think I'm beginning to miss some of the signs and symptoms because I have been learning to adapt to the challenges over time.
