How do you get a neurologist?

Hi,
I've had problems affecting me over the years. My doctor doesn't take me seriously.  She keeps insisting my problems have to do with iron deficiency, or lack of sleep, or stress and anxiety.  I've been researching MS and seems to me like I might have it. I know you have to get a neurologist to run tests and help, but I called some in my area and they all said I need to get a referral. My doctor will not refer me because I asked for this in the past and she kept saying things like I'm making a big deal about nothing and simple vitamin supplements will fix the problem. Which it hasnt.  So how can I get a neurologist? I've had some people suggest I get a new doctor and then have the new doctor refer me to a neurologist, but that isn't working. I live in Canada where it takes a long time to get a new doctor and have been on a waiting list for a new doctor for almost 2 years.   I had a new symptom too this week that I am not sure is related to MS or what. Basically when I am sitting I cannot stand up very easily because there is a heavy weight on my legs almost pushing me down. Help me. Thanks

Im sorry you are having such a diificult time with your GP/Family Dr. I had to deal with the same attitude with my initial Dr. He told me that my symptoms were due to pregnancy and/or having children... Well, I dont have children and have never been pregnant, lol. Unfortunately there are Dr's out there who don't even take the time to read their patients bio, let alone be concerned with your concerns..
Its time to find a Dr who will LISTEN to your concerns and will not simply dismiss your symptoms..
I agree with the other posts..Sounds to me that the only way around the referral issue is the Emergency room..
Good Luck!

I read your post a couple of times, and I;m guess your issue is that you are covered by Canadian Provincial coverage.  One of our other Canadian friends might chime in to help.  I thought there was some way of going through the Provincial Government to accelerate a referral, but I may be mistaken.

For all the health care issues in the States, I just went to my insurance company website and found a doctor at the University affiliated with the Rocky Mountain MS Center and called for an appointment.  I guess there is no way to do something like that in Canada.

The emergency room came to my mind also. They may run some preliminary tests like simple blood tests and then, hopefully, refer you to a neurologist.  You would at least get the emergency room doctor's opinion on your condition.  How demanding have you been with your regular MD?  Maybe you need to be more forceful

Strawberrie,

I am not sure what your next step would be. I think that the emergancy room can refer you to a neurologist if they deem it necessary. Are there any other doctors in the office you go to? Call your insurance and see how you can get a referral? I am not sure what else you can do if your family doc isn't taking you serious.

I wish you the best of luck in getting the referral. Hopefully your doc will come around or you can find a way around it.

Take Care,
Paula
