totally OT: software question

This one is for the tech savvy members.  I want to put together a presentation / slide show of old photos of my uncle for his 80th birthday later this year.  I and other family members have managed to come up with many wonderful pics that were taken over the years, from his childhood on the prairies to his wedding and marriage to my mother's sister, to his grad school days in Calif and his career as a university professor in Calgary, to summer vacations and Xmas holidays all across Canada spent with family.  I have started scanning these pics, and of course picture quality varies as some are very old and not great quality.  I've used Power Point extensively at work but am looking for something more sophisticated than that to put together something that looks really professional, probably with some music incorporated.  I could hire someone professionally to do this but I'd prefer to make the effort myself as this would make the gift more personal.  If any of you have used or know of some good software for this kind of task I'd appreciation suggestions.  Thanks!

PowerPoint support music and transitions between slides.  Most of the time, I'd move over to my Mac and use JPEGS added into iMovie to do this.

Try movie maker or related software. I have used it and worked great for what I was doing.
