Dear Fadbach,
If your treating doctor is mentioning about the surgery, then either you should trust him or get a second opinion and then decide which is better.
SO mush if muscle loss is not good.I would want you to act soon, rather than just keep on thinking.
Since i have not examined you, i won't be able to pin-point the diagnosis.
Hence my sincere advice is same as i have told above.
Please don't panic and trust your treating doctor and go for a back surgery.
However, it would be really good, if you can take a second opinion from another surgeon.
Feel free to discuss more.
Regards

Thank you for your advice.  I will go back to my neurosurgeon and continue to have my MRI to assess the damage.  I will ask my GP to refer me for a second opinion once we have the results of the MRI.  Are you open to further opinions if we scan the results so that you can read them?
Thanks again.
