8 year old seizure patient / brain calcification

My 8 year old son recently had (3) seizures within a 24 hour period. He has been perfectly healthly and has never had a seizure before now. He has a small calcification on the right side of his brain according to the CT scan. His neurologist recently informed my wife and I that he has calcifications on numerous portions of his brain. We were also informed that results taken on a recent EEG indicated slowing on the right side of his brain. His neurologist seems to think that the calcification had nothing to do with the seizure activity or the slowing on the right side of his brain.

My wife and I are scared that this may lead to something terminal and/or that the neurologist may not be fully informing us of the severity of the matter. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Physiological calcification is seen in pineal gland and choroid plexus in children between 8-12 years of age.
Other causes of calcification depend on its distribution, if it is around blood vessels it indicates a vascular abnormality, if it is diffuse it indicates a metabolic disorder, if is located at one particular point it indicates a tumor.
Since your child does not have any other symptoms i think there is a possibity that it is just a physiological calcification normally seen in his age group.
But i suggest you discuss other possibilities as well with your neurologist. Good luck!

The right center portion of his brain was what the CT scan indicated(I am not sure what the medical term is for this area). He really has no other symptoms other than the three seizures within 24 hours. He is on 2.5 ml of Trileptol twice daily at the present time to treat the seizures. All three seizures had indications of being complex partial seizures as they began, but two of the three rapidly progressed to generalized, and he actually stopped breathing and had to receive CPR on those occasions.

He has not had a seizure in about two weeks, but his follow up EEG indicated continued slowing on the right side of his brain, and his neurologist stated that he did not believe that the calcification(s) were the cause. My wife and I are very concerned and hoping that someone can provide some insight.

Hi,

Which part of brain had calcified spots?
Does your son has any other symptoms other than recent seizures?
Normally the electrical activity on both sides of the brain should be same. No slow waves are seen normally in EEG. Slow waves are seen during deep sleep.
Presence of slow wave on one side of the brain may indicate a brain injury or brain illness.
Please discuss this issue with your neurologist.Hope this helps!
