second opinion

hi, for the last year and half i have been suffering alot with what seem to be neurological symptoms, i have been seen by a neurologist and had an mri scan of the brain but nothing seems to have been found, i am 29 a female and was in quiet good physical shape but since these episodes keep happening i have gone down hill. my symptoms are severe short term memory loss which scares me, walking difficulties, some days i am fine yet i have weeks were i struggle to move through either pain or my legs just wont do what i want them to, i have fell over seneral time because of this. i loose my balance really quickly, if i close my eyes i cant stand without wobbling and i can not walk putting one foot infront of the other, the area under my breasts is totally numb, get bad tremors which get worse to more i try to do a specific task which involves fine hand movement.I find it very difficult to understand new tasks, ie: new reciepe for cooking i have to read it over and over again but still sometimes don't understand it.i wake up in the moring with pain in my back, neck and hips and have a horrible pain around my rib area like someone is squeezing me, this tend to ease of after getting up and moving around for a while, sometime im scared to have a conversation as my words come out mumbled up and i say something that really does not make sense, i get alot of headaches but that may be because im fed up with my health at the moment...i seem to be loosing alot of hair, i don't feel bowel movement only when its urgent, i generally mark under wera but have not totally messed myself, only once as i cannot tell the difference between bowel movement and wind, same with urinating i only know to go when its urgent. some times my vision goes blurred and struggle to focus properly. My sense of smell is next to none. I'm not very good a writing anymore as i struggle to explain things well enough for people to understand or i spell alot of things wrong. I get very nasty sharp sooting pains in my limbs, i drop alot of things and bump into alot of things. I have lost 3 stone in the last 6months without dieting which is great but still alittle worrying. my quality of life is so bad i feel like im banging my head up a brick wall, do you think i am within my right to request a second opinion, thanks

Hi there,

I'm afraid I can't help you with a diagnosis, as I'm in pretty much the same boat as yourself, but I can however, share more a degree of empathy with you with regard to the symptoms you're suffering.

I'm a 34 year old male, who, prior to December 2008, was leading a normal life, with no major health problems, studying for a degree at university. Since then, as each month has passed, I've become more and more cognitively impaired, which has resulted in being in a constantly confused state, finding the smallest of tasks, like washing or making breakfast, very perplexing, and struggling to make conversation, as I just get things jumbled up all the time. I now just feel constantly drunk, and in some sort of daze like state.

My short term memory is poor, balance is iffy to say the least, and my awareness of what's going on around me is also pretty poor. Much like yourself, I have trouble gauging when I need to use the toilet, apart from as when you say, it's urgent, then it's not so much of a problem.

I have nigh on constant twitching of the muscles everywhere on my body, accompanied my pains up and down both my arms and legs. My coordination is pretty poor, and I'm forever banging into things around the house. I've also lost  a couple of stone in weight since this began, which I've been unable to put back on, and suffer with really bad insomnia.

I saw a neurologist about three months after all this began, and he wasn't really interested, but nevertheless, still refereed me for an MRI brain scan which came back normal. I've also had extensive blood tests done which also came back normal.

I've now, just today, finally been refereed to see another neurologist, for a second opinion. Like yourself, my quality of life in non-existent presently, and totally unrecognisable from the life I led last year.

I'm not sure what the rules are on here, with regard to posting email addresses, but I'd be most interested to hear what tests you've had performed and how whatever future investigations you have done turn out, along with any possible diagnosis that are put forward. Similarly, if I can, I'd be only too glad to help you out with advice on tests, etc, to have, if they're suggested to me.

All the best,

M.
