Back Pain
Hello, I am a 56 years old male with a mild back pain which spreads to my right leg.As a former pro soccer player I had experienced many sports injuries which includes lower back injuries as well.I was wondering if someone can help me understand the severity of my Lumbosacral spine MRI's.
The lumbar spine shows a smooth lordotic curve with a normal promontory angle.Degenerative changes and dehydrated disks are seen.Decreased disk height is seen at L4-5 and L5-S1 levels with mild end-plate signal change.
Evaluation of disk spaces reveals:
-Disk bulge at T11-12,L4-5 and L5-S1 levels with foraminal extension at mentioned lumbar levels with minimal protrusion.
The bony spinal canal displays normal width.
The vertebral bodied are normal in their number , shape and interrelationship.
The conus medullaris terminates normally at the L1 level and divides into its filaments.
The imaged soft tissues show no abnormalities.

You have lumbar disc desiccation or drying up of the disc, which is a degenerative change that cannot be halted. Its progression can be slowed with adequate management. Disc protrusion at T11-12,L4-5 and L5-S1 levels can be conservatively managed and with treatment can slip back into original space. Conservative treatments like hot and cold compress, stretching exercises, back low impact exercises, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, specially designed corsets, spinal manipulation and traction and epidural injections are tried. If everything fails then laminectomy and other spine surgeries may be contemplated. Please consult your doctor regarding this. Take care!
