Blackouts and Losing All Sound

Hello,

I orginally posted something similar in the Heart forum but wanted to see what people thought here as well. I've been having issues with blackouts/greyouts. They occur quite suddenly when I'm either walking around or just sitting. I will get a sudden on-set of lightheadedness, see light spots, smell a weird electrical heat smell, get a de-ja-vu feeling, then my ears start ringing intensely until my hearing goes out all together, at the same time my vision will dissolve out into nothing but a grey expanse. They are very disoritenting, my thoughts will scatter and I will feel like I'm dreaming, I'm also not aware of anything going on around me. These evets last from 30 seconds to several mintues the longest being 5 mintues. Afterwards I will have a slight headache and be tired. If I rest for an hour I'm fine. Also there is something new, I am starting to loss all sound for a few mintues without the other symptoms. No ringing, nothing just sounds suddenly drops out and then comes back again. Very strange. I will be consulting a physician with this but wanted to get others opinions and experiences as well.

Thanks
sasquash

i had that happen to me yesterday when i was drinking with a couple of friends. first i had a couple of drinks then i went outside and it was very cold i was slowly passing out and the next minute i fell on my head but good thing i was wearing my hat because that was the only thing that was protecting my head but afterwards all i could remember was my brother draging me into the house and he sat me down on a couch and all i could see was black for about 3 minutes then i started seeing grey and black patches kind of like a when a tv is all fuzzy but without all of the light colours and bigger pixels i could see the outlines of everyone but hardly, then it took about 15 minutes to regain my whole vision and when i did i saw my brother having some sort of seisure of something it might have been a panic attack because he told me he thought i was dead and i thought i was blind.

Hello,

Sorry I've been MIA the last day or so. RockRose, I have heard of syncope although the many of the symptoms do not describe what I am feeling. Syncope is usually referred to as fainting as a reflex response. I've never been a squimshy person nor can I ever remeber fainting.

Christy H, to answer your question, the episodes themselves are very disoritenting, it seems as if time slows down or at other times speeds up everything gets very surreal. Afterwards, yes I do have an out of it feeling, however this is worse the longer the episode lasts. If it's only a brief 10 to 20 seconds I can feel shaken up and a bit foggy but can quickly reoritent myself within a mintue or so. If it's over  mintue or like this last time 5 mintues it takes me 5 to 10 mintues to be fully aware, of time, place and what's going on, it's kind of like you don't know if your awake or dreaming. In either case I will usually have a slight headache and feel very tired, resting for an hour or so makes me feel still a little foggy headed but much better than before.

Hope that answers your question.

Your doctor may want to run a number of test such as a EEG and CT scan to rule out possiablities. I would go tothe doctor very soon that that you can peace of mind as to what my be causing your blackout/grey. May I ask to you feel really out of after an episode and do you know when they are coming?

Sasquash, I agree with annie that it sounds like it could be a seizure. i have seizures myself and I am always tired and fall asleep and have headaches after each seizure. Better go to the doctor to check that out.
Good Luck!

I'm sure you probably know this,  but the general term for that is "syncope".  My son had that this last year,  but it was during a period of time he wasn't eating well,  he was drinking a lot of powder protein and working out WAY TOO MUCH.  The loss of hearing for him would come during weight-lifting sessions.

After a lot of testing,  he was just told to stop working out so hard and eat better,  and he hasn't had any since.

Best wishes.
