Anyone know if weakness in foot can be corrected without microdisectomy?

I saw a very reputable neurosurgeon in Pittsburgh.  He is suggesting a microdisectomy due to weakness in my foot.  I will be having nerve conduction studies next week.  According to neurosurgeons impressions of my MRI -L5 S1 nerve root is compressed and he says that if I don't go ahead with surgery I will be wearing a foot brace.  I am not finding any positive reviews regarding surgery.  I'm hearing that the problems are worse after surgery.  Anyone know of alternatives, or positive results with microdisectomy?

Please seek other opinion. I had a microdisectomy on l4/l5..caused so many problems as I experienced a re-herination 6 weeks later, and I thought I saw a reputable surgeon. I had a badly compressed nerve root, but after firing my surgeon after the operation I saw another who said that the surgery was not necessary in the first place. Avoid surgery at all costs.

unfortunately, that is what doctors seem to do just treat the symtoms. Good luck!  Otherwise try the Mayo clinic they are very good and can give you an outlook on what to expect with the problem you are having.

Thanks for the input.  This was my 2nd opinion.  I'm thinking of trying a steroid injection, but from what I understand, would only be treating the symptom.

PLEASE get a 2nd opinion.  A neurosurgeon wanted to do surgery on the S1 S2 of my back and I found out it was NOT necessary.  I ended up with a neurological problem that had nothing to do with my spine.
