my husband was diagnosed last year with a cavernous avm in his
brainstem, and we are wondering what ways he can over come the
anxiety, and lasting symptoms, his neurosurgeons said because of
the location it will just take time. He has made some progress
but still has some lasting problems. Any advice???
symptoms in the face on one side and on the limbs on the other, if due to structural neurological disease, loaclizes to the pons region of the brainstem (although unusual to be just the lower cheek). However it is unlikely to intermittently switch sides
It is true that a switching hemiparesis can be a sign of impending brainstem stroke - but this usually happens in teh acute setting, not over one year. The MRA if normal if fairly relaible - questions are when the MRA is not normal that it is not so accurate. In the setting of a normal MRI, somatosensory evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potentials can help provide evidence of structural disease.
If the blood vessels are entirely normal, your doctor may have to evaluate for other conditions with perhaps a spinal fluid analysis or further blood tests for Lyme, sarcoid (these are rare conditons and the yield is probably low)
Good luck
Just a suggeston, Try taling a large dose of vitamin B12, about 100mcgs. It can't hurt you. It only help people with neuro symptoms. See if you notice any differnec after a week.
