muscle Atrophy

I am 55 yrs old.  I've had muscle atrophy in my right hand for at least 15-20 yrs.  I have no pain, but my lack of strength in my hand has gotten worse over the years. So to the point that hand writing has become difficult.  I have been to a few specialists over the years and they say that they don't know what it is.  They wanted to put me on steroid therapy, but I declined.  I can't be the only one who has this condition?  Looking for some answers.  Thanks

Yes, all the tests were done, except a speacial blood test that is only done by a Boston lab.  This test was part of the steriod thearpy, i never took it.  The nerve studies were done at least 10 yrs apart.  My doctor wants to have another one done.  The first two studies had the same conclusion.  They don't know what it is or why, so why bother, they already have the results?

Thanks

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

Were an EMG and nerve conduction studies done? This will give a better insight into the problem. If the atrophy is due to a degenerative or demyelinating cause, steroids may help. But you could try physical therapy it will improve the muscle strength.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
