What is the difference between "small vessel arterial disease" and "small vessel inchemic disease" and what exactly is small vessel inchemic disease and what can are the steps involved, if any, in correcting it.
Thanks for writing in.
Small vessel ischemic disease occurs due to occlusion of small blood vessels in the brain. This usually occurs as a result of diabetes or hypertension or both. This results in white matter changes in the brain seen on MRI. Clinical presentation is stroke. Medications like aspirin help in patients with small vessel ischemic disease.
Small vessel arterial disease can involve arteries in the lower limb or coronary arteries in the heart. This occurs due to blockade of arteries from an atherosclerotic plaque.
