I'm not a doctor so just sharing my limited experience. It may help experts if you clarify where your pain is.
Disc bulge at L5 S1 level is probably affecting S1 nerve roots in lateral recesses, that is off to sides, near foramina where the root exits and goes down to next level. The thecal sac I think is filled with CSF and houses the sensitive nerve endings. Pressure on this can cause pain, narrowing of the spaces or canal can be caused by pressure from the bulging disc or inflammation, maybe of the surrounding ligamentum flavum or the facet joints that hold the discs steady, connecting the L5 disc with the S1 disc below. I suspect your pain medicine is Anti inflammatory and you should take it as prescribed,by stopping the inflammation it gives damaged nerves a chance to begin healing. I believe pain needs pressure and inflammation to cause trouble, so treating the inflammation is important. Probably strengthening exercises to improve abdominal strength will help your disc, get a physio or someone qualified to show you the proper exercises. As I say I am not a doctor and have limited experience but I suggest follow doctors advice, I'm sure someone knowledgeable will suggest more, good luck, dogive them an idea of what pain and where, it may help.
