i was involved in vehicle accident 01-07-99, as soon as the crash was over i had a tremendous headache, about a half hour later my neck locked up completely. was first told i had a bad cale of whiplash. after 9 months of treatment rehab exercises etc.the problem only got worse. extreme constant headache dizziness vomiting disorientaion sharp stabbing pain in the neck.in oct 99 i was finally "allowed" an mri that showed c3 c4 c5 discs were bulged into the spinal cord. injection proceedure was done and it reduced the headaches from 15/10 to 3/10.mmuch better now but still have lo to moderate constant headache dizzy and disorientation. the disorientation is similar to the feeling you get when you are driving and hit a dip real fast. this feeling can be brought on by any movement or sudden sound. my most recent doc visits i have been told that the remaining symptoms may be caused by the ear. they think that the tube in my ear may have been "crushed" by the muscles in my neck and may have possibly grown closed. i have also had a numb tingling feeling in my hands (thumb and first two fingars) since the crash and in the last month or so i have had numb tingle in the left side of my face. work sent me to ortho specialist in chicago last week. he told me that none of my symptoms could be caused by any neck injuries and that i should get on with my life. needless to say i was very disappointed with that opinion. prior to the accident i was healthy and happy. i had never missed a day of work in over 20 years. since i have missed over 200 days ov work in 19 months and i have been miserable almost all the time. i do wish that i could resume my former life. any input on my problem would be greatly apprieciated. thatnk you for your time.. jcw
Dear Jan:
Migraines can cause some changes in cognition. But general headaches do not.

Dear Jan:
I am not sure what is happening to your hearing. Sometimes our eustation tube gets blocked and we can hear strange noises, but whether or not this was happening to you I can't tell. I would see if it returns before getting worried. No, I have never heard of low calcium causing headaches. Usually our body will maintain the needed ionized calcium level, even at the expense of bone. Low calcium can cause seizures but you have definitely known about this event. A calcium channel blocker will not hurt your calcium level and it might even help your headaches.

Thank you for your response. Do you think that the headache itself caused the confusion and forgetfulness, is that possible? I have to tell you that it is very frightening when it happens!
Dear Dr.,
I hope you don't mind me posting here. Yesterday while I was sitting at the hairdresser reading, my right ear started to feel as if it were vibrating (inside). The only way that I can describe it is the way it might feel if a helicopter were close by, only faster. It only lasted a few minutes at the most, but it was very bothersome. Have you ever heard of anything so weird? Also, have you ever heard of lack of calcium causing bad headaches, someone repeating themselves, not remembering how to get home and not remembering other things also? I have had this happen to me many times, years ago, and was told it was calcium (by a Naturopath)and it does seem to happen only if I miss taking my supplements for awhile. The reason I am concerned at this time is that my cardio. wants to add a calcium channel blocker to my meds. What do you think?
Thank you.
Dear Judi:
Mites are usually species specific, and although there may be an occasional mite in you ears, they would not take up residence in your ear canal. You might try alittle mixture of water and vineger (20% vineger to water) and rinse your ear canal.
