Exercise program post triple cervical fusion

I had a successful triple cervical fusion C5-C7 two years ago. I did core training as part of rehab and continue stretching daily. I was very active before symptoms originally got bad, and I miss the exercising. I was given so many ultimatums  by my surgeon that I backed off everything (no lifting above 40 lbs, no stretching up and out, no swimming except with snorkel, no running, no climbing, no team sports...no, no, no). I am really out of shape now and looking for a way to lose fat and build muscle strength back. I continue to have cognitive problems, though no where near pre-surgery levels, and I think that exercise will help my brain function. Where can I find someone to help build a new program for me? Are there trainers with enough background to keep me safe? I'm in Seattle.

Dr. gave you a copy/paste answer. I am 6 months post 2 discs and have been cleared for all activities. It depends on your surgeon. Mine is very experienced and laid back. Another might say limit your activities. Get another surgeons opinion-you might get another answer.

Thank you for your reply on rehab. I am two years out of rehab and looking for a maintenance program, as I stated. My surgeon did not have a referral for me and was not specific as to what IU could do; only what I couldn't. I'm looking for local information.

Thank you for your question. Usually, recovery from a fusion procedure takes time (standard is six weeks) and as everyone is different it may vary as well.  Most of the times, one may experience neck and head pain during the recovery period. However, essentially you should avoid prolonged working on computer/laptop, lifting heavy objects, bending, twisting and excessive exertion for the first three weeks. It is not like that you restrict all activities but you should gradually increase your physical activities over this period. Additionally, common complication of a fusion is that there is a possibility that another fragment of disc will herniate and may cause similar symptoms. Therefore, strict rehabilitation program is appropriate in some specific situations, and you may check this with your treating neurologist. Hope this helps.
