Lumbar Spine Fusion surgery coming up

I am getting ready to go through surgery for a fusion L5-S1. I have had 2 previous surgeries where the surgeon just cut out the ruptured disc and that was it.  I found a highly respected surgeon.  I was really nervous and tired when I met with the octor (I don' t get alot of sleep because of the pain). The surgeon is going to do a fusion.  They are going through my abdoman first and then approx. 24 hrs later go back in through my back to do something.  Does anyone know why my stomach and then my back?  I know I can find next week, but was hoping someine could give me some insight on this....if so, I would very much appreciate it.

Hello Kimber226,
Anterior lumbar fusion is done through an incision in the stomach area. This anterior lumbar fusion procedure is usually done for patients with a high degree of spinal instability or in revision surgery  Fusing both the front and back provides a high degree of stability for the spine and a large surface area for the bone fusion to occur. Also, approaching both sides of the spine often allows for a more aggressive reduction .Most times, the anterior approach is performed first. By removing the disc material and cutting the anterior longitudinal ligament which lays on the front of the disc space, the spinal segment is released and allows for a more complete reduction. After the anterior and the posterior spinal implants are inserted, this segment is much more stable than even a normal spine segment. Thus the surgeon is required to operate first anteriorly through the abdomen and then the spine posteriorly.

All the best.
