I have been having headaches for over 11/2 years,
I have been going to the Dr's in Colebrook and Lebenon (Hanover). In 1993 I was diagnoist with a Schwanoma Tumor, It was located in my chest.
Dartmouth told me that it was attached to my right lung (which they took the left side aprox.1/3 of. They removed my 5th rib, and it was attached to my spinal cord. They told me that my backbone would erode emencively throughout my life and never be back to normal.  Now these headaches have become constant. There is pressure in the back of my head which goes to the front, I'm tired all the time, I've lost from May, from 116lbs down to 98lbs' and it's Nov.I use to work 3 jobs and within 1 year I'm down to 3 days if i'm lucky. My mind is fuzzy, I'm sick to my somach all he time, have no appetite, and there is a lump in the back of my neck that if pressed on, sends a sharp pain down my spine up to my head. Can that type of tumor return?

Dear Dr. CCF,
I posted a question i beleive in May to you and i think i posted under someone elses post but you did reply to me. I was confused about the diagnosis of MS. I told you in my post that i had been diagnosed with MS for 18 years, prgressed to the point i was confined to a wheelchair. I became bedfast in 1998 and admitted to a hospital and was given a battery of tests, MRI brain, spinal cord, cervical, thoraic and lumbar, evoked potentials and blood work. All normal except for very low vitamin B12 level, and was told after that i had B12 deficiency and not MS. However i did have a signal in my cervical area that was confimed by my second opionion, that it was damage due to vitamin B12 deficiency. I was confined to a wheelchair for 7 years before this. I will try to be brief. I told you before i am now walking and doing very well. I will need an injection of vitamin B12 for the rest of my life. However my second neurologist will not definietly rule out MS. We just don't talk about it. I did ask her to give me a definiete diagnosis or rule it out and so far it has been put on hold. I know my case is very complicated but i feel i have a right to know if i have it.MS would not be a shock if it was but not knowing for sure is a concern to me. I might add my spinal tap was normal too. I was diagnosed with MS for 18 years so you can see how confusing this is. What would you suggest i do? Get a third opinion or just wait. I have read there are neuroligists at the Cleveland Clinic that specialize in MS. Would you suggest this opition? Any advice you have would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi Julie,
You seem to be very cocerned about your medical problems. My advice to you is get a second opinion and hang in there. Time will tell. there are many neurological illnesses we can have and it takes a long time to get a diagnosis.Good luck.

Dear Julie:

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms.  The good news is that your MRI, evoked potentials, EEG, CSF values, and blood work are all normal.  I will also assume that your neurological exam was completely normal.  At this point, I am not sure what to tell you.  The really worrisome things would have shown something abnormal on the testing done thus far.  It is a bit unusual to have complete one-sided body findings that include the head and body.  What did the MRI of the cervical spine show since you mentioned that you fractured the vertebrae of your neck?  Were there any finding concerning the discs or spinal cord compromise?  I realize that having your symptoms over 1 year is emotionally and physically draining, but there are times that we as physicians just can't fit all the pieces of the puzzle concerning an illness together for awhile.  Some illness' begin very subtle and it takes a tincture of time until the symptoms tell us what might be going on.  It sounds like this may be your case.  I would stay in touch with your neurologist and see how things change over the next few months.  You may want to have an EMG to see if there are changes in the peripheral nervous system and this may give a hint as to what is going on.  Hang-in there.  Sorry, I wasn't much help.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
