As a reminder, you have been kind enough to provide me some feedback regarding my EMG results. I have a mixture of normal, low amplitude, short duration, and polyphasic motor unit potentials in the triceps, glute, p. longus, and supraspinatus.
1- You explained to me that this may be a benign finding because there are some normal MUAPs. Why is this the case? Is it really possible to have some abnormal MUAPs and yet be healthy and fine? This is very confusing to me. I just don't understand why there would be any abnormal potentials if I'm healthy. I worry the normal potentials in these muscles may become abnormal in time and all the potentials will be abnormal in the future because a disease process is working on me.
2- You also mentioned that since I am a weight lifter it may impact my EMG...yet the doc that conducted the EMG said it doesn't matter. I didn't lift for a week before the test. What kind of needle changes do you commonly see in healthy weight lifters? Why does this occur if it is the case?
3- Finally, do my odd symptoms seem symptomatic of a muscle disease- bilateral aches in calves-sharp at times and in different areas (can't recall straiing them), aching knees, lower back tightness, ankle stiffness, odd buzzing and tremoring feeling in muscles after working them. It feels like my muscle just tremor easily. In addition, I do feel shakier when I hold a contraction in some muscles. Is this normal or a sign of disease? I really don't recall being this way in the past. And I don't feel like my muscles have the same stamina when I lift but I'm not sure if this is part of getting a little older. I do get fasciculations all over my body and have tingling hands at times...but there is no explanation for this yet.
4- I do want to let you know my CPK levels were 212 (lifted a day or 2 before); 313 (lifted a day or 2 before), 361 (didn't lift for a week), and 137 (didn't lift for a week). Aldolase was 6 when my CPK was 361. AST and ALT were normal, Sed rate=2, CRP=.3. I've read you can have a CPK settle back to normal and still have a muscle disease...is this true?
I'm sorry for all my specific questions. I'm desperately trying to better understand my situation and so worried about my health. Finally, if I get a muscle biopsy they are suggesting the right tricep because my left tricep was EMG tested. However, it will be a month before I get the biopsy so couldn't I get the left tricep tested (should be healed from the EMG needle)...I want to be sure to test the abnormal EMG muscle and my left tricep does seem shakier at times than my right.
Thanks again and I wish you all the best...sincerely. You thoughts mean so much and I hope you will respond will detail and I promise to lay low for a while and stop posting. My anxiety is driving me crazy and making me very upset.
Kind Regards
