Pain

I recently went to the doctor for pain in my shoulder, arm and ring finger and pinky finger feeling like they are asleep all the time. I am no longer able to close index finger to the finger next to it. I have lost strength and control in my fingers indicated. The pain in my shoulder is getting sever. The doctor looked at both shoulders and said that I have muscle atrophy in the shoulder and arm. He said that it could be something soft tissue causing nerve intrusion. Or something in my neck causing this. Going for and MRI. He said that this was not good and gave me some medication that is not doing anything and was wondering if someone might have a clue to what is going on and what and if surgery will be required.

I don't drink but it is funny you mention diabetes. I have had it now for about 12 years.I try really hard to keep it under control. I have been giving it some real consideration going to an insulin pump. The reason I have not done it so far is because I love to scuba dive. If this is related I will talk to my doctor about getting one and see if it will maintain better control of my glucose levels.

Thank you for your question. Although without being able to examine you I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that you need, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern.

Most likely possibility here could be related to nerve compression, neuropathy (nerve pain like numbness and tingling at affected areas) due to alcohol abuse (if you take) or diabetes. This may lead to muscle weakness and coordination also. If you suffer continuous weakness and notice reduced strength of muscle bulk in your limbs, please arrange an appointment with a neurologist right away who may evaluate the possibilities first. These “red flags” could be indicative of progression of neuropathy/nerve compression and early treatment (like B-Complex)/surgery is essential if permanent damage needs to be avoided. Further referral to a physiotherapist for exercises could be beneficial and may produce relief of symptoms. Hope this help. Take Care & Stay Healthy!!!
