Stinging leg pain

I get an occasional knot the size of a pea in the lateral aspect of my left calf, with interrmittent stinging sensations, like a needle poking me, causing shooting pains. These episodes last about 15 minutes, and may occur four or five times a day, or not occur for weeks. What could be causing this? What can be done to eliminate the problem?

Hi there. This could be a swelling in the nerve, possibly a neuroma. It could be a cyst in the muscle pressing on the peroneal nerve or any small nerve in the lateral aspect of leg. This could be a venous dilatation like varicose vein. You need to consult a surgeon for a detailed examination and needful investigations to confirm the swelling, whether it can be excised or not. I cannot comment further from this medium without more information and want of clinical examination. Take care.

Do you use any kind of hormonal contraceptive?  Your symptoms sound similar to a potential serious side effect my gynecologist warned me about when I started Nuvaring.  As I recall, the painful lump is a blood clot traveling up your leg so it can give you that aneurysm you always wanted but could never afford.  Seriously, her advice was something along the lines of GTFO ER ASAP (I'm out of acronyms), unless you want an aneurysm for some reason.  I have heard that it's a relatively quick, painless, and surprising way to die.  Just looking at the bright side.  :-/
