There are a variety of treatments for the above 2 disorders. Its not clear whether the doctors who diagnosed those disorders in you, also spoke to you about treatment options?
For bipolar disorder, Lithium has been a mainstay of therapy over the years and has the best efficacy. However, there are side effects such as tremor, and if too much is taken, there are toxic side effects. Other alternatives include Valproic acid and lamotrigine.
There are no specific treatments for fibromyalgia, as the very nature of the syndrome is poorly understood. Symptomatic treatment depending on which symptom one has, combined with nonpharmacologic measures (such as biofeedback, physical therapy etc)
Some of the bipolar medications are also used to treat migraine (such as valproic acid), and this could be taken into consideration by your doctors
I personally do not have eaither disease, but my mother has fibromyalgia, and my father is bipolar, for my mom, she eats a diet high in protein, and takes regular meds, the protien diet helps keep the pain away, my father is on a high dose of Lithium, and also geodon, he is ok, not himself, and has lost close to 50 lbs, since diagnosed last August 2004. Everyday gets a little better for both of them, Good Luck to you.
