Ulnar nerve hand symptoms and neck/shoulder problems related?

I've had just started to have weakness and some pain in my hand and little and fingers that I'm fairly certain must be ulnar nerve related (I sleep with my hands and elbows tucked under me and wake up hurting). My question is: For about six months I've had sensitivity, tingling and soreness of my shoulder and neck that I thought was computer-related. it gets to the point that I can't wear certain shirts because the tags/seams seem to irritate (but no rash or anything on the skin). Could the neck/shoulder symptoms also be ulnar-related? It seems to make sense. And what can I do or who should I see about it? Doctor? Chiropractor? Massage therapist? Home remedies? Thanks for any help.

Hi, Thank you for your question. These kind of symptoms arise from nerve irritation in the cervical (neck) spine because of cervical disc bulge. This pain & numbness may be referred and perceived as occurring in the back of head & shoulders (as it blades)- LHERMITTES SIGN, arms or chest, rather than just the neck. Other symptoms may include vertigo, nausea (dizziness) and stiffness. It will be best that you consult a neurologist who would like to prescribe Pain killers, steroid and muscle relaxants. Other treatments could be cervical orthosis such as a soft cervical collar or stiffer neck brace to restrict neck movement till you get complete recovery. In addition, cervical traction may also be suggested by the doctor, if condition is severe. Hope this helps.

The reason I responded to your post is because I had the same problem with shirt tags. Yes, the ulnar nerve, the shoulder and the neck are related. The ulnar nerve originates in the neck. You probably need to do some neck stretches and posture related exercises.

Just see your Doctor for a referral to a good Physical Therapist. No Chiropractors.
