What are the side effects of Eptoin?

I am a 25yr old male. I have had a case of seizure only once. The doctors advised me to undergo radio surgery as a small AVM was diagnosed in the left parietal lobe in my brain. I have been prescribed Eptoin 100mg thrice a day. I plan to go under radio surgery after a few months.
I have been taking Eptoin for the last 3 months. I have gained around 5kg of weight since then. I feel dizzy and I believe my energy levels have gone down.
I want to know, are these the side effects of Eptoin?
Should the consumption of Alcohol strictly be avoided or a few drinks occasionally in social gathering will not do any harm?

Hello AB, welcome to the medhelp forum. Phenytoin can cause certain side effects like dizziness and mental confusion.  Some people may also manifest incoordinate movements. Weight gain is not a documented side effect. It could be related to your alcohol consumption or wrong dietary habits and lack of exercise.  An occasional one or two drink may be fine but moderate or large amount can cause significant increases in blood levels of phenytoin due to induction of hepatic enzymes. Whereas if you are a chronic alcoholic, the phenytoin levels may be lower than expected and can cause seizures. I suggest you consult with your neurologist in this regard.
