What could this be?

In August 2000, I started to develop muscle aches and unusual sensations (burning, numbness, tingling, tightness), in my legs, arms, and hands.  These sensations would jump from one area of my body to another in a matter of seconds and this would go on all day long.

I was checked for Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme, MS (MRI and neurological exam), everything turns out to be negative.  My neurologist attributed these symptoms to a virus.  In January 2001, I went to a rheumatologist who treated for Lyme with Doxy for 3 weeks.  Early April, I was symptom-free.

In June, some of the symptoms came back for 3 weeks, they disappeared again.  I resumed exercising at the same level as before with no decrease in performance.

Some symptoms have reappeared again since February.  I've had burning feelings all over my body my legs (it jumps from one area to the next), hypersensitivity on my eyelids, hands and the lower parts of my legs (at times, it's been so sensitive that wearing jeans is difficult).  These symptoms have somewhat disappeared and have been replaced with twitches all over my body (more so on the lower legs and my right hand).  When I wake up in the morning, my left legs is very tight (especially the calf muscles).  I've been under a lot of stress in the last three months.

I'm worried now.  What could this be?  Should I worry about these twitches?

Sorry to hear about your symptoms. Glad everything has been normal so far with regards to your workup. This is somewhat reassuring that nothing serious is going on with your brain. As for what's causing the symptoms, it doesn't sound like any typical neurologic syndromes. I can understand if you are concerned about ALS with all the twitching, but again it doesn;t sound like the typical presentation. It could be what's called benign fasciculation syndrome which is a non-serious condition of twitching that comes and goes and doesn't lead to any major medical illness. Stress is certainly another factor which could be causing your symptoms. If you are worried, consider a neurological exam just to make sure everything is ok. Good luck.

HI, I've similar problems and was also treated for Lymes with Doxy for 3 weeks.  My titer was really low so another MD thought it was a false +  But said the Doxy didnt hurt anyway to do it.  As far as the Viral thing i was also dx with havign fifth disease at the same time this all started.  Fifth is very mild for children but can cause arthritis and numbness in Adults.  You may want to check into it.  Good Luck and i hope you feel better.
