Meralgia Parasthetica

I am currently diagnosed with meralgia parasthetica.  It started to appear about two months ago as a tingly, numb sensation on top of my left thigh.  It has progressed to a very sharp stabbing sensation about 4 in the morning, wake up yelling in my sleep, very, very painful.  I am currently taking Lyrica 150 mg and a couple of Aleves, but these do not seem to be helping much.  I am also diabetic, but I came down with this while my blood sugars were in tight control - I just had a hemoA1c and it came back at 6.0 - nearly normal.  I am starting to get discouraged because it is disrupting my life.  Can you please help me?  I would really appreciate it...

I have heard that this condition can go away with time, but it hasnt for me yet, its been almost a year, and i have actually put on weight with the condition...I am awake right now because i was startled in a dead sleep with stabbing burning pains in the outer thigh.to which i awoke screaming like a person in an insane assylum. I had taken a motrin 800 mg, a hydrocodone and a gabapentin before i went to sleep and all to no avail. Oh and i exercise my abdominal muscles every night. Skinny people also can have this condition, so im not convinced that weight has alot to do with it, i am only 20 lbs overweight.

Hi,

I would suggest you to make some changes in your day to day life like lose weight if you are overweight, exercise your abdominal muscles, wear clothes that are lose in the hip area, alternate heat and ice application, and adequate rest periods after strenuous activity.
You can also discuss the option of local nerve block with your doctor. In extreme cases surgery to decompress the nerve is done.
