My wife and I had planned on getting a divorce. She started to behave irrationally and began using drugs like valium and drinking heavily. While I was out of town for work, she put the kids in the car at 12:30am and drove about .5 miles before she hit a tree. She was very drunk and had taking some valium or something All three of them went to the hospital. While the kids will be fine with time (6 year old has 7 fractures in back, but no spinal cord injury), she is being real slow at coming around.
My question is, if she was already depressed, had alchohol problems, and drug problems before the TBI injury, will it just get that much worse as she recovers? I plan on filing for divorce tomorrow, but I will continue to be there for her, until she gets better. I am very afraid of what she may become, if she will be even more dangerous to us. I see tons and tons of articles about how TBI patients are more prone to substance abuse, but not once do I see anyone saying it can change someone for the better.
Any input is appreciated. Thanks.
