back pain and leg numbness

A couple years ago when i has in high school, i had a door push open towards me from another person and it hit me in my left hip. my leg went completely numb. and it turned black and blue, the school nurse said that i probably just bruised it. well then i noticed that both of my legs go numb for no reason. I realized that they went numb way before my incident with the door hitting my left hip and one time my left leg went numb for a whole week. i went to a school nurse again and asked if it was normal  and she suggested that i visit my family doctor. I did, and he sent me to get X-rays on my back because he thought it maybe caused from a pinched nerve in my back. He never called me back with the results. Ever since then i never knew what was wrong. Now its been at least 2 or 3 years and my legs still go numb to this day. I was sitting on the floor, Indian style, and noticed that the left side of my lower back was hurting. It continued hurting for weeks, then it seemed like it got worse and went into my left hip. Sometimes i cant even take the pain. There are days that i can tolerate and there are days that i cant. I dont know what it is, im not sure if its something in my nerves or the disks in my back. Pinched disks do run in my family.

Sorry to hear about your leg numbness. I recently started having back pain(have had severe leg pain for 2 years as well) and had a repeat MRI of the lumbar spine and found out that I had bulging disks. I received a epidural and thankfully it worked. I would suggest getting an MRI and see if your disks are possibly compressing your nerves which would explain the numbness that you are having in the legs. Hope you get better soon!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello Tiffany.

Sorry to hear about your pain. Yes, it does look like some compression effects in your back.  Get a fresh check up done. And follow up for the investigations. You may consult an orthopedic surgeon. Avoid stressful activities.

All the best
