'internal tremor'

I have been suffering for 7 months with strange sensory symptoms
which manifest as a feeling of internal trembling in my head and
both arms. It feels as if a low voltage, high frequency current
is running in this area. These symptoms evolved after a flu like
occurance that included stiff neck, extreme head pain and unusual
mental sense of disassociation.  These flu symtoms lasted for
6 weeks with the residual symptom of "internal tremor" continuing on.  I am very frustrated.  All neuro exams have been
normal included MRI, EEG, EMG.  I finally say a psychiatrist
who put me on Ativan, which has reduced to some degree the sensation, however she feels very strongly that my symptoms are
not psychiatric, but physical.  This topic of "internal tremor"
only seems to appear in relationship to people with either parkinson or essential tremor which the neurologists feel I don't have.  Can anyone shed any light on this topic or direct
me to the appropriate area of medicine.  Thank you.

My daughter has suffered over the past 1 1/2 years the following: balance disorder, tremors, dizziness, headaches, numbness in left foot. Saw  6 Doctors-no one knew what was wrong. 6weeks ago saw another Neuro Dr. Ordered PET SCAN. Shows cerebellum degeneration.  Did MRI with contrast. MRI was clean. Now scheduled for EEG.  She is on Zanaflex  8-10mg. daily. This has helped some what the numbness in left foot. Still continues to get weaker and no energy. She is taking Vit. B12 along with her normal vitamin intake.  She desperatly needs a diagnosis to be treated correctly. She  is in touch with a neuro dr. but he has ruled out MS but says her problem is of unknown origin @ this time. Maybe the EEG will show something.  What is next after an EEG.?? I don't  understand what takes so long and why it has to be done out patient.

I know the neuros don't take many extra questions in the forum due to cost, but after reading so many of these posts about benign fasiculations it seems like a few questions could be asked for the group of twitchers and maybe resolve some of the questions for us.  Do BENIGN fasciculations make a person's legs or arms feel fatigued, not necessarily weak - I think I could walk around the zoo, etc... but would just feel really tired out signify something different than say someone who cannot hold a glass or push the gas pedal on the car?  How do the neurologists determine what is "weakness" and what is due to probably overreacting muscles to all this twitching.  My legs feel tired all the time and I see a specialist in two months, but I am still really worried.  The second question is, do most of you twitchers feel a generalized fatigue, like you just don't feel right?  Thank you for your responses and best wishes to all...

I have similar symptoms which worsen with fatigue. They started about five years ago and suddenly started as if turning on a switch, and affect the whole body. My family doc just wants to give me tranquilizers. Now I know I'm not crazy and will insist on testing!

I also have this internal tremor feeling, usually in my chest upon awakening naturally, never when I wake with an alarm clock.  I have been diagnosed with mitochondrial myopathy (affecting the nervous system and muscle). Have had the tremor for 3 years now,....diagnosis within past month.  Good luck...JanB

Get a lyme test. I have spoken to at least 3 lyme patients with this type of symptom...plus the illness. It's probably a shot in the dark but worth a try.

Hi Mark,

I, too have this same "internal tremor".  Mine started over 2 yrs. ago after a viral-type illness. I have been tested for MS., and Lupus, now the diagnosis seems to be leaning towards Lupus.

Mine usually happens upon waking, and if I am really tired.

I did find reference to this on another site, and I quote below what the Dr. quoted:

I have had several patients also report an "internal tremor" which they notice at different times of the day. This is not something that anyone can observe but these patients have all had MS and have reported this observation spontaneously and independently, so I believe it is a "real" phenomenon. It has even been commented upon in McAlpines text on Multiple Sclerosis, sort of the standard reference text for MS experts.

Hope you find help.

I know I'm not supposed to place a question under another, but I have been trying to get a question to you for almost 4 months now, so I hope I can this way.
I sit here with incredible burning sensation in my hands, feet and face, sometimes unbearable.  I have small bumps on my hands as well.  My leg muscles cramp up something terrible, jolting me out of bed almost every night, and now my arms are starting to do the same.
I am starting to get really scared!
I've been to my doctor, and to an Infectious Disease specialist, with no luck on what this is.
I have had these symptoms for over 5 months, and they are progressing!
A lil history....I had pneumonia at the first of the year...and then 6 months ago my daughters came down with Parvo virus.  My doctor thought at first my symptoms were from the parvo virus.  But with the  symptoms continuing, and progressing....they don't think it is that.
I hope you will answer my questions and give me your thoughts on this case.
Again, I know I'm not suppose to be asking under another question, but I am very despirite!
Please help me
Tia

Dear Mark:

Sorry to hear about your symptoms.  It is difficult to tell you what the feelings your experiencing might be. I hate to use the word post-viral, but this might be a component of what your feeling.  The good news is that all of your tests are normal and that makes a neurologist feel alittle easier because of the worrisome problems that an abnormal test might suggest.  I know that doesn't help you much to understand why.  Assuming that your completely healthy with no medical conditons "to speak of", the easiest explanation is post-viral.  Depending on the symptoms at the time of the stiff-neck, mental changes, headache you might have suffered from an encephalitis, acute cerebellitis, cerebritis, etc and the residual from any of these conditions could account for your symptoms.  There is usually good recovery of these, depending on the type of agent responsible, but the recovery time varies and can be many months.

Sorry, I can help you much.  Many times viral illness produce symptoms that can be very hard to pin down as to what actually caused them because they vary so much between patients.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
