muscle loss

I have disc narrowing throughout the lumbar spine. The L2-3 has a posterior disc bulge with bilateral facet arthropathy. the L3-4 shows same, L4-5 shows the same and severe canal stenosis and left foraminal narrowing. Narrowing atL5-S1 level.
My question is... can this cause muscle loss in my hips, the backs of my hips, my ankles, and the tops of my feet. Equal amounts in each leg and foot. The left side is almost identical to the left. I am seriously considering surgery. Is this possible, equal loss on both sides or should I be concerned about a neurological disease?
Thanks

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello dear and welcome to the medhelp forum. Lumbar spinal stenosis may cause numbness, weakness or cramping in thighs, legs and feet, shooting pain, and paralysis of legs in severe cases. Muscle loss or wasting results from sedentary way of living, secondary to disuse due to rheumatoid arthritis, or osteoarthritis if you are suffering. Other causes of atrophied muscles include neuromuscular disorders like guilain barre syndrome, secondary to diabetic neuropathy, malnutrition or stroke. You need to consult a neurologist since this could be a neurological disease apart from the considerable lumbar canal stenosis that you have. Wishing you all the best.
