It can also be caused by autoimmune disorder where your immune system attacks the myelin sheath. (gbs or cidp) These can be diagnosed by EMT, NCS, spinal tap, nerve biopsy. If diagnosed there are various treatments. (steroids, ivig, plasma exchange)
Peripheral neuropathy is more of a symptom than a diagnosis. I guess Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy (Peripheral Neuropathy with unknown cause) could be a diagnosis. Peripheral neuropathy can be from toxins (including alcohol,) Diabetic Neuropathy, etc. Once all the "symptom related diseases" have been ruled out, and you can't find a cause, then a diagnosis of Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy would seem appropriate. I think I'd really like to make sure it is not due to diabetes or heavy metal poisoning, etc.

I have been diagnosed with peripheal neuropathy and it all stared 6 years ago at the age of 36. For the longest time, the doctors seemed confused about my situation. I've been to 4 neurologist, 6 podiatrist, and 2 back doctors. In short, I have the same or similar question: Is there a way to find the problem and/or recover from this? The only medication that works for me is Hydrocodone or similar and I only take 1 at night when I can no longer handle the pain and burning.
