scuba with cavernous angioma

I have been diagnosed with a cavernous angioma in the middle of my cerabellum.  It has leaked and for a short bit 1 1/2 weeks caused speech problems, dexterity issues in my right hand and memory problems.  Most of the speech issues and all of the motor skills issues have returned to normal. I have headaches often.  I know this sounds like a really stupid question, but can I still scuba dive.  The doctors at DAN (divers alert network) have said the pressure from diving should not effect my angioma, What could?  I have a 10 day trip coming up in June, what is the chance I can still dive?

Hi there.

The water pressure from diving would usually affect the air spaces in the head like the sinuses, ears, and even air spaces inside repaired teeth.  I agree that fluid filled spaces such as the blood vessels, or for your condition, the angioma, should not be affected by the water pressure from recreational depths of 30 meters or less.  However, it will be very hard to tell if there will be no effect at all to the angioma and I suggest that you discuss this thoroughly with your neurologist and your other doctors before diving.  Regards and God bless.
