If there is a Dr.House in the House-I NEED YOU. I am a 51 y/o female retired nurse. I began getting numbness and tingling in my extremeties about 5-6 weeks ago. I had been to a wedding in Peurto Rico, came home, then went to Florida to look for a winter get-away. While in Florida, I did come down with a horrendous allergy reaction where my eyes and nose were soooo itchy, I wanted to rip them off at times. This passed in just a couple of days. The numness, tingling, buzzing sensation has spread to my face, lips, nose, and engulfs my entire abdomen and around into my back. I was getting the chills-with no fever- but that has passed. I am extremely irritable. I get tired more than normal. I have a history of panic attacks which has been successfully treated with celexa and xanax for 19 years. I also take ditropan for over-active bladder. I also have a history of a herniated disk at c5-6. No changes according to the latest MRI. Also negative MRI with and without contrast on brain and neg. MRI on cervical. Did find out that some of the houses we looked at in Florida did have Chinese drywall. We did not spend too much time in any of the homes though. I also did hit my head (ever so slightly- during some turbulance on the plane) but again the MRI showed very minimal changes. I did not get bitten by anything I am aware of. My eating is normal though I have lost just a few pounds. Complete blood work has been done on all vitamins and minerals and all was perfect. BS is normal, Thyroid is normal. I am being tested for heavy metals with a 24 hr. urine collections as I write this. Though- I am expecting this to come back normal as well. I can't take this buzzing feeling all over. I need your help. Nine more tubes of blood was taken last Thursday. Nothing so far. Help.

Hi Dear

Peripheral neuropathies are a general term to describe neurological signs and symptoms that arise outside of the brain in the peripheral nerves. It would be unusual for the face, neck, and skull to be involved. Generally, tingling sensation or numbness starts in the toes and spreads upward. Tingling might also begin in hands and extend up your arms in a stocking-glove pattern or distribution. From your brief description, it does not seem like the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Please consult a neurologist and get a neurological examination done. Also, a few tests like thyroid, vitamin B12, blood sugar, and electrolytes may help in the diagnosis.

Hi Dear,
The tingling sensations can be either due to some nerve compression like disc compression around neck, cervical disc. It can be due to spinal arthritis or due to diabetic neuropathy.
Treatment involves neurotin and vitamin b complexes.
