what would be a reason for not having a bowel movement

My fiancé has had a hard time since he was a kid but now he can 1-2 weeks without going to the bathroom and it's causing his ammonia levels to get high and has to be hospitalized. We have no understanding or reason as to why this is happening. He just doesn't get the "urge" to go. He is prescribed Lactulose but it makes him crampy and bloated and in a lot of pain. He is given fiber, and now takes magnesium which helped a little, we haved tried all over the counter meds, and Mirilax. I don't know what else to do to make him get the feeling to go. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why he doesn't get bowel movement? When his ammonia levels get high it gets very dangerous and he loses his mind and we don't know what to do to help him before it gets to that point. Please Help .. We have an appointment with his Dr. and his Neurologist soon , so I was hoping to throw in some suggestions to them so maybe we can solve this. He has never had a colonoscopy either.

thank you for your comment. He doesn't have acid reflux he said. But I am hoping the neauro can help. I had never heard if going to the neuro about this problem before until recently, I don't know what it could be, But I'm hoping we will find something out. The magnesium has helped since he was on it but we will try the Miralax and Magnesium together rather than Magnesium with lactulose. Thank You

Hi....it can be a number of different things, but seeing a NL is a good place to start. I was DX;d with IBS as a child as well and went as long and longer with out the urge to go...I finally did get a DX of a neuro issue and am doing much better since.,

I was told to increase my water intake....tried the Miralax and magnesium...and I find the magnesium and pro biotics really help.....not sure if he also has reflux/GERD....or if ne of the meds he is on can add to the issue, but something to check out too.

I wish him luck and pray the NL can help.
