Hit and Run OCD

My OCD has taken on a new form. I am now scared of accidentally hitting a person and not realizing it. I know, I know, how can you hit something, let alone a person and not realize it... but this is my life.
I drive back to the "scene", I check my car, I check the news, I ask for reassurance... I just don't know how to enjoy driving again.
Today I was driving with a friend and a pedestrian crossed very close to my car, downtown driving... my friend says that I most certainly did NOT hit anyone. My typical response would be to circle back...but I wanted to try CBT. Now I am at home anxious as hell, and freaking out.
I just want this to stop.

Definitely do the visualization several times.  After a while your mind will become bored with it and you will be able to move on.  Losing your job is a huge stress on your life and I'm not surprised something surfaced.  OCD stinks!

Yes, I was on this forum a few years back. Things have been going well for me. Then I lost my job and the stress returned.

I was with someone in the car. She knows OCD and she has been reassuring me I did not hit anyone.

Im worried I ran over his foot or something and didnt feel a bump. My windows were open, so I assume Id have heard it if I hit someone... screaming or something. No marks on my car.

I will try what you suggested. Thank you :)

Hi lola...I remember you from quite a long time ago.  So I take it you did see a therapist and learn CBT?  Part of CBT is not allowing yourself to go back.  I know that is stressful but that is when you start doing your controlled breathing and your self-coaching.  If you continue to go back, you are just feeding into your OCD.  The same goes for looking at news stations and papers to see if somebody has been hit.

Try this.  Close your eyes and picture yourself hitting a person with your car.  Picture what it would sound like.  The thud you would hear, the possibility that they would fly up onto the hood of your car.  Or you run over them and how your car would feel as it went over top of a person.  Once you get this mental image in your head it should be easier for you to let the thought go because none of these things you imagined happened.
