WOW THANK YOU SOO MUCH that is a place to start its sure beats looking at you tube trying to find help. and watching the ocd project. there is only one study going on in New York ive been trying for 6 months but im getting closer to getting accepted at Colombia hospital.
The IOCF (International Obsessive Compulsive Foundation) has lots of resources, professional articles, and referrals to therapists. If there is truly no one nearby, start the process yourself. Educate yourself through reading books such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Complete Guide to Getting Well and Staying Well, by Fred Penzel, and Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Personalized Recovery Program for Living with Uncertainty. Get the OCD Workbook by Bruce Hyman and Cherry Pedrick, and follow the exercises. Above all, don't give up hope. I have seen many seriously disabled folks learn to manage their symptoms and continue with life, while learning to live with OCD.
I also tried to contact the people from the tv show ocd camp and project ocd for help but those shows were stopped it seems like people don't care but from all the reading ive been doing online it seems that hospitals are getting all the funding for mental health more than any other illness even cancer but they still cant help me with ocd I don't understand I guess its because they don't understand either. one person was talking about magnetic resonance but this is new I cold end up lobotomized or something a person playing with a big magnet reminds me of electro shock therapy with a different device maybe I should try it though if I get my brain fried at least I cant think about all this negative stuff going on.
I was there today and seen the head person there they said she can teach CBT but she does not have any training with OCD she said next visit she will tell me about meditation we meet once a month so this is going to be a very long process i'm seeing.. Now I know why it sux to be poor if I had money I could get the help I need but even using insurance your just a sucker at the back of the long line of everyone else that has insurance.
if I had the 200 an hour to pay I could get all the help I need but I don't got it.
Psychiatrists are okay for talk therapy and prescribing medication but they usually don't teach cognitive behavioral therapy. That usually comes from a psychologist. Can you check around the hospital for a psychologist that teaches CBT? I'm sure if they are a leading mental health hospital, then they have psychologists than can do this.
they listen to what I have to say write it down and then at the end say here is your medication. the pills are stated above. they tell me that I OCD can be maintained with therapy but they are not therapist and this is at one of the leading mental health hospitals in NY. for OCD there is no help hardly anywhere is one of the largest developed cities in the world. when I did finally speak to leading therapist in the hospital they said hey we don't really deal with OCD although they were able to diagnose me as having it pretty quickly. I've good to the OCD foundation trying to find help but they are very limited unless I have money to move to another state stay there for a very long time and pay about 200 dollars an hour.
Hi there. What does the psychiatrist do? Does he/she teach you cognitive behavioral therapy or do they just prescribe medication to you?
