Considering removal of fibia titanium rod

I have been reading anything I can about removal of fibia rod removals.  I am 2 1/2 year post fibia fx in multiple places.. It has caused me pain from day one.  I have tried everything I can think of to increase my muscle strength.  I had the leg x-rayed again, and while it looks good the top pin sticks out, and that obviously increases the pain when I try to lay on my side.  I also walk 1+ miles/day, plus exercise during the week, but the pain makes it almost unbearable at times.
Has anyone else had this and did it help to remove the rod and pins?
